Novel thermoplastic molding compositions comprising a polyester-carbonate polymer and graphite fibers. The compositions possess improved rigidity and heat distortion temperature properties with the addition of 0.5% to about 45% by weight of graphite fibers. In an example, a polyester-carbonate was prepared from bisphenol A, terephthalaloyl dichloride, isophthaloyl dichloride and phosgene. Graphite fibers were added to the above polymer in the amount of 10%by weight.

A junction semiconductor light-emitting element consists of a flat portion,a columnar projection provided on one surface of the flat portion, and electrodes provided on both sides of the flat portion. The columnar projection has therein a PN junction extending at right angles to the flat portion, and the flat portion a PN junction extending in parallel therewith. This light-emitting element is formed so that, when a predetermined voltage is applied between these electrodes, a larger quantity of electric current is injected into the PN junction in the columnar projection than into the PN junction in the flat portion. This light-emitting element is capable of being oscillated continuously with ease at room temperature. The light-emitting element according to this invention easily enables a two-dimensional arrangement and highly-advanced integration. If optical detectors and saturable light-absorbing layers are integrated in the direction of the thickness of the light-emitting element, various types of high-degree optically-functioning devices can be obtained.

A comparator circuit suitable for use as a sense amplifier for a memory array is adapted to distinguish between the levels of two input signals and to provide an output signal in binary form in dependence on the relative values of the input signals. A symmetrically organized circuit in the form of a bistable multivibrator is initially operated in a differential mode and subsequently transitioned to a latch mode. Constant current source biasing (28, 32) optimizes amplifier gain characteristics for the levels of input signals received. The amplified difference between the two input signals is stored within various capacitance elements of the circuit output stages. During the differential mode, the cross-coupling elements (9, 11) of the bistable multivibrator are disabled. At the termination of the differential mode, the amplified difference between the two input signals provides the initial conditions for the regenerative dynamics associated with the enabling of the cross-coupling elements (9, 11) and the transition to the latched state.

An elastic surface wave coupling element uses an output electrode (11d) on one surface thereof and at least two input electrodes (11b, 11c) at positions at different distances from the output electrode, or at different phases. The ouput electrode of this element is connected through a power distributor to variable gain amplifiers (15, 16) which receive two gain control inputs. The ouput sides of the amplifiers (15, 16) are each connected to an input electrode of the element. A variable frequency oscillator of this structure can be reduced in size to be smaller than a conventional one, thereby providing advantages as a high frequency oscillation source for VHF and UHF bands.

In a process for beveling the sharp corners on an integrated circuit metal layer (2), a photoresist mask (12) used to etch a pattern in a lower level metal layer (2) is retained on the wafer during the beveling operation. With a positive photoresist (12) and an aluminum alloy metal lower level layer (2), an etch with an alkaline photoresist solvent isotropically removes both photoresist and metal, the photoresist (12) being removed at a faster rate than the metal (2). Beveling of the metal corners suppresses the reentry effect otherwise encountered when subsequent dielectric material (16) is deposited over the lower level metal layer (2).

An amplification degree stabilizer for photomultiplier tubes (hereinafter referred to as PMT's) in a radioactive ray position detector which is constituted by a scintillator and a plurality of PMT's. The neighboring PMT's (3) are so grouped as to belong to different groups (A to D), and outputs of the PMT's (3) are added up together through adders (6) for each of the groups. The added signal of the group belonging to a PMT which is determined to be closest to a point of emitting light is analyzed for its crest value by a crest analyzer (14). Results of analysis of crest values are collected by a counter memory (data collecting means) (15), i.e., changes in the amplification degrees of the PMT's are collected as statistic data. Relying upon the statistic data, contents of a register (17) which stores the data related to high voltages to be applied to the PMT's (3) are corrected by a data processing circuit (16). According to the above amplification degree stabilizer for the PMT's, the data related to amplification degree of the PMT's are collected in parallel, thus making it possible to stabilize the amplification degree of the PMT's (3) within short periods of time.
