A head-mounted device may have eyeglass lenses. Each eyeglass lens may have an optical system with inner and outer lens elements and a waveguide and light modulator between the inner and outer lens elements. The waveguide of each system may be configured to receive and guide an image from a projector. The waveguide may have a may have an output coupler configured to direct the image out of the waveguide through the inner lens element to an eye box for viewing by a user. The light modulator in each optical system may be electrically adjustable between a higher transmission state that enhances the visibility of real- world objects through the lens and a lower transmission state that dims ambient light to enhance the visibility of the image from the projector. The light modulator layer may have electrode structures that use portions of the waveguide and/or outer lens element as substrates.

The output coupler may also transmit world light from real- world objects towards the eye box. A bias lens may pass the world light to the output coupler. An adjustable tint layer having multiple states that involve transmission of different amounts of the world light may be disposed between the bias lens and the output coupler. Different states may impart different colors and/or may impart a gradient transmission characteristic to the world light. The bias lens itself may form the adjustable tint layer. The adjustable tint layer may have a transparent electrode layer that is provided with one or more AC voltages that heat the adjustable tint layer. The adjustable tint layer may be a self-switching electrochromic device that includes a transparent solar cell.

Electronic devices such as head-mounted electronic devices may include displays for presenting images to users. To accommodate variations in the interpupillary distances associated with different users, a head-mounted device may have left-eye and right-eye optical modules that move with respect to each other. To hide internal structures from view, the rear of a head-mounted device may be provided with a stretchable fabric cover with openings for receiving optical modules. The fabric cover may have first strands forming a warp knit layer with diamond-shaped openings and second strands that zig-zag back and forth within the diamond-shaped openings. The first strands may stretch in the warp direction, while the second strands may stretch in the weft direction. The second strands may have a fuzzy covering for hiding electrical components even as the diamond-shaped openings expand when the fabric is stretched.

Shifting the positioner in the first direction causes the transparent lens element to be biased in a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction at multiple points around the periphery of the transparent lens elements. The positioner may be attached to guide structures that each have a respective angled slot. Each angled slot may receive a respective tab of the transparent lens element or a respective tab of a lens shaping element that is attached to the transparent lens element.

A hybrid display may include different display portions with different resolutions.
