An apparatus for removing from dielectric surface of electrostatic target electrode fouling deposits generated substantially as tiny solidified polymer particles during flash-spinning of fibrous web structures. The particles are attracted to and deposited on the dielectric surface of the target electrode used for corona charging of the fibrous web structure and the resulting fouling deposit increases the rate of loss in charging efficiency of fibrous structures. The apparatus comprises a self-cleaning rotating brush (52) that removes fouling deposits and prevents build up thereof on the surface of the electrostatic target electrode (16, 18) and thusly significantly increases charging efficiency and in-process lifetime of target electrode dielectric surfaces (16, 18).

A tool (10) for setting rivet nuts (45) in which then non-rotatable collet (23) moved by handles (11, 12) receives in threaded engagement the mandrel holder (29) so that the mandrel holder (29) is axially adjustable with respect to the collet (23). Mandrels (36) are readily inserted in, secured to and removed from the mandrel holder (29) so that a selected mandrel (36) can be used for each type of rivet to be set against selected anvils (18, 20 and 62). Tool (10) is adjustable in various ways to ease placing the rivet (45) on the mandrel (36), affecting adjustment of the position of the rivet nut (45) vis-a-vis the anvil (18, 20 and 62) for a proper and effective pulling stroke and adjusting the travel of the collet during the stroke.

An improved dielectric surface coating (16) for electrostatic charge target electrodes (14) used in electrostatically charging flash-spun fibrous structures (26) being fed to and along the target surface. The dielectric surface coating is primarily comprised of a rubber copolymer formulation of acrylonitrile/butadiene and phenolic resin hardener and exhibits a volume resistivity in the range of about 2x10⁹ and 2x10¹⁰ ohm-cm when measured at 60°C and 1000 volts and a hardness in the range of 75-85 shore a Durometer. The dielectric surface coating significantly decreases coating degradation rate due to in-process environment and substantially reduces the loss in charging efficiency caused by flash-spun fouling deposits on target electrodes.

A flash spinning process is disclosed wherein a polymer/solvent composition is sprayed from one or more dies onto a moving support (3) within a spin cell (15). The temperature within the spin cell is controlled by spraying solvent into the spin cell atmosphere whereby evaporation of the solvent reduces the temperature within the spin cell. The improvement is that the spin cell temperature is accurately controlled to within 48° to 52°C as required to enhance visual properties of the spun sheet and to maximize spin pack life.

A combination valve is disclosed which is useful in flash extrusion of polymer-liquid mixtures or polymer solutions. The combination valve comprises an automatically actuated main process fluid valve (13, 14) and an automatically actuated prime-flush valve (25, 26) in communication with the main process fluid channel (24) just downstream from the main process fluid valve. In operation the prime-flush valve is opened at start up to supply fluid under pressure to the main process fluid channel so that solvent does not evaporate and leave solid polymer to plug the system when the main process control valve is first opened. A shutdown, just as the main process control valve is being closed the prime-flush valve is opened to supply fluid to the system and remove polymer therefrom before it can solidify and plug the system thereby interfering with the next start up.

The process involves preparing a suspension of peat, whereby peat fibers are liberated from the parent material. Coarse particles are separated in a dewatering step, and peat fiber material of a desired water content is obtained. The invention provides a process in which colloidal particles resulting from suspending the peat are isolated from the colloid containing water, as a byproduct of peat processing, and in which the process water is recycled into the peat suspension. This makes it possible to use a simple, mobile installation which is suitable for use almost all year round, in relatively small peat areas which may be poorly drained or otherwise up to now unsuitable for peat exploitation. The peat fibers and colloid material obtained via the process have use as soil improvers and modifiers, as combustion material, and in cardboard and filter manufacture.
