A system-integrated motion sensor is provided fur monitoring and adjusting the EVF system. The motion sensor is based on the concept that, with the aid of the electrodes (4,5) already present, which are used fur the vis-cosity control of the EVF in the hydraulic system, an electric current signal is simultaneously produced which is directly related to the rate of flow of the EVF between the electrodes which are either stationary or can be displaced with respect to each other. Thus the motion sensor consists of the electrodes (4,5) with the intermediate EVF layer (1) and a circuit (9,10,11) connected to the electrodes (4,5) for measuring the electric signal produced by the motion. The measured signal thus obtained can advantageously be used for adjusting or controlling the viscosi-ty of the EVF layer. For this purpose the measured signal is compared with a preadjusted value and the difference is used for controlling a high-voltage device which provides an output voltage dependent on the control voltage. This output voltage is fed back to the electrodes (4,5) of the EVF layer (1) and in turn influences the viscosity. Thus the measuring sensor for the motion, i. e. the EVF layer together with the associated electrodes (4,5), simultaneously forms the regulating unit for controlling the motion.

CONTAINER CLOSURE

A jar has its closure sealingly applied by means of a downthrust to compress a gasket. The head load applied to the closure of that jar as a result of subsequent stacking of other similar jars on top of the jar in question is limited by engagement of stop means, in this case a rib of the closure with the rim of the jar, so that there is no possibility of permanent deformation of the gasket imparted during such stacking and effective to completely neutralise the residual compression of the gasket which is intended and is actually applied as a result of the closing head load.
The arrangement may be such that the closure can be applied by simple downthrust, without the need for a twisting chuck.

POWER LINE WORKING APPARATUS
A new and improved apparatus is provided to permit a live or hot electrical power line to be cut in the field for line service or other purposes. The apparatus is connected at each end to the line at positions spanning the site of the cut. The attached end portions are then moved closer to each other, easing the tension on the portion of the line to be cut. The apparatus is then connected to the live line with jumper cables, forming a parallel electric circuit. The line is then cut and a cut end tied back. Flow of current through the apparatus is broken. An interrupter in the apparatus suppresses any arc which may tend to form.

A method is described in which a web and a ribbon are fed to a form-fill-seal machine, the web being formed into a sleeve around a filler tube (which acts as a mandrel) and thereafter into a series of bags. The ribbon is between the tube and the sleeve. A longitudinal seal is made to close the side wall of the sleeve. Transverse seals are made to close the top of one bag (after filling) and the bottom of a succeeding bag. The ribbon is sealed into the top and bottom welds of each bag and then a hole is punched in each bag, the holes passing through the ribbon and the top transverse seal of each bag. The ribbon can be located at a position which is circumferentially spaced from the longitudinal seal, or can be welded into the longitudinal seal.
