We claim as follows:

1. A Fresnel lens for a display device, the Fresnel lens comprising:
a first sloped surface angled to receive input Hght;
a second sloped surface facing the first sloped surface; and
a third surface linking the first sloped surface to the second sloped surface, wherein the third surface is configured to scatter sttay light reflected from the first sloped surface.

2. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the third surface is substantially
flat.

3. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the Fresnel lens is substantially within a plane and the third surface is substantiaUy paraUel to the plane of the Fresnel lens.

4. The Fresnel lens of claim 1 , wherein the third surface is blackened.

5. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the valley floor includes variable surface topography to scatter sttay Hght.

6. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the valley floor has a depth relative to the first sloped surface and the valley floor depth is configured based on a useful input ray angle.

7. The Fresnel lens of claim 6, wherein a useful input ray angle is an angle where an image ray directed through the first sloped suiface is configured to generate an image at a desired pixel.

8. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the valley floor has a depth relative to the first sloped smface and the valley floor depth varies relative to the radial distance from a center of the Fresnel lens.

9. The Fresnel lens of claim 1, wherein the first sloped surface, the second sloped surface and the valley floor create a Hght input unit and where the Fresnel lens has a pluraHty of substantiaUy sirnUar Hght input units.

10. The Fresnel lens of claim 9, wherein the valley floor has a different depth relative the first sloped surface for different Hght input units.

11. A display device comprising:
a Fresnel lens having a first sloped surface angled to receive input light spaced from a second sloped surface by a valley floor;
a lens system to project an image;
a substantially planar back plate mirror to reflect the image to the Fresnel lens, the back plate mirror substantially parallel to the Fresnel lens; and
a substantially planar intermediate mirror to reflect the image projected by the lens system to the back plate mirror, the intermediate mirror being
substantially parallel to the back plate mirror, wherein the intermediate mirror is substantially perpendicular to the optic axis of the lens system.

12. The display device of claim 11, wherein the Fresnel lens is in a plane and the valley floor is substantially parallel to the plane of the Fresnel lens.

13. The display device of claim 11, wherein the valley floor is blackened.

14. The display device of claim 11, wherein the valley floor includes variable suiface topography to scatter sttay light.

15. The display device of claim 11, wherein the valley floor has a depth relative to the first sloped surface and the valley floor depth is configured based on a useful input ray angle.

16. The display device of claimll, wherein the first sloped surface, the second sloped surface and the valley floor create a light input unit and where the Fresnel lens has a plurality of substantially similar light input units.

17. The Fresnel lens of claim 16, wherein the valley floor has a different depth relative the first sloped surface for different light input units.

18. The display device of claim 11, wherein the Fresnel lens includes a diffuser to diffuse sttay light that passes through the Fresnel lens.

19. A display device comprising:
a Fresnel lens to display an image, the Fresnel lens including a means for scattering sttay light;
a lens system to project the image;
a substantially planar back plate mirror to reflect the image to the Fresnel lens, the back plate mirror substantially parallel to the Fresnel lens; and
a substantially planar intermediate mirror to reflect the image projected by the lens system to the back plate mirror, the intermediate mirror being
substantially parallel to the back plate mirror, wherein the intermediate mirror is substantially perpendicular to the optic axis of the lens system.

20. A Fresnel lens for a display device, the Fresnel lens comprising:
a first suiface configured to receive an image ray, the image ray
configured to impinge a tip portion of the first surface;
a second surface facing the first surface; and
a scattering surface configured to scatter sttay light reflected from the first surface, wherein the scattering surface couples the tip portion of the first surface to the second surface.
