A method is provided for making an edge-sealed fuel cell membrane electrode assembly comprising the steps of: i) providing a suitable membrane electrode assembly lay-up; ii) positioning a suitable annular layer of a thermoplastic (30); and iii) applying pressure and heat sufficient to melt impregnate the thermoplastic (30) into the fluid transport layer (20) or layers of the membrane electrode assembly lay-up (10) and simultaneously bond the fluid transport layer (20) or layers to the polymer electrolyte membrane of the membrane electrode assembly lay-up (10). The polymer electrolyte membrane of the membrane electrode assembly lay-up (10) may be perforated in its outer sealing area. Membrane electrode assemblies made according to the method of the present invention are also provided.

La présente invention a trait à un procédé permettant la fabrication d'un ensemble à bords scellés d'un ensemble d'électrodes à membrane de pile à combustible comportant les étapes suivantes : i) la réalisation d'une superposition de couches appropriée d'ensemble d'électrodes à membrane ; ii) le positionnement d'une couche annulaire appropriée d'une matière thermoplastique ; et iii) l'application d'une pression et d'une chaleur suffisantes pour l'imprégnation en fusion de la matière thermoplastique dans la couche ou les couches de transport de fluide dans la superposition de couches de l'ensemble d'électrodes à membrane et le collage simultané de la couche ou des couches de transport de fluide à la membrane d'électrolyte polymérique de la superposition de couches de l'ensemble d'électrodes à membrane. La membrane d'électrolyte polymérique de la superposition de couches de l'ensemble d'électrodes à membrane peut être perforée dans sa zone de scellement externe. L'invention a également trait aux ensembles d'électrodes à membrane réalisés selon le procédé de la présente invention.
