CLAIMS

1. A photorefractive composite comprising a charge transport matrix and an electrooptic dye having an aliphatic group of four or more carbon atoms.

2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the aliphatic group of the dye incoφorates an unsubstituted alkyl group.

3. A composite as claimed in claim 2 wherein the alkyl group is branched.

4. A composite as claimed in claim 2 or 3 wherein the alkyl group has at least six carbon atoms.

5. A composite as claimed in claim 4 wherein the alkyl group has at least eight carbon atoms.

6. A composite as claimed in claim 5 wherein the alkyl group has a branch of at least 2 carbon atoms.

7. A composite as claimed in claim 6 wherein the alkyl group is the 2-ethyl hexyl group.

8. A composite as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the electrooptic compound is an azo compound or a stilbene compound.

9. A composite as claimed in claim 8 wherein the electrooptic dye is of the formula I _

fy- o -Z y-v a) where R, is an alkyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are alkyl groups having up to 3 carbon atoms, and one of X and Y is nitrogen and the other is carbon or nitrogen.

10. A composite as claimed in claim 9 wherein the electrooptic compound is EHDNPB.

11. A composite as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 comprising PVK as a conductive matrix and a charge sensitising agent therefor.

12. A composite as claimed in claim 13 wherein the charge sensitising agent is TNF.

13. A composite as claimed in claim 14 wherein the charge sensitising agent is C60, C70 or TNF.

14. A composite as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the charge transfer matrix is poly(methylphenyl silane) or a poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative.

15. A composite as claimed in claim 14 wherein the charge transfer matrix is poly[ 1 ,4-phenylene- 1 ,2-diphenoxyphenylvinylene].

16. A composite as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15 comprising 10 to 70% by weight of the electrooptic dye.

17. A composite as claimed in claim 16 comprising 40 to 60% by weight of the electrooptic dye.

18. A compound of the formula I



where R] is an alkyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are alkyl groups having up to 3 carbon atoms, and one of X and Y is nitrogen and the other is carbon or nitrogen.

19. A compound as claimed in claim 18 which is of the formula II
