What is claimed is:

1. A method of controlling the growth of plants comprising applying to the locus of such plants
a compound exhibiting an IC50 value of less than about 300 nM in the inhibition of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in daffodil chromoplasts; with the provisos that said compound
(A) is not of the formula:



wherein each of R 1, R2 and R3 is independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, and each of X and Y is independently hydrogen, halogen, nitro, acetamino, carboxyl, lower alkyl, methoxycar-bonyl, hydroxyl or methoxy, and salts thereof;
(B) is not of the formula:



wherein R1 is H, alkyl, alkenyl or -CH2COOC2H5; R2 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl or -CH2COOC2H5; and R3 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexylmethyl, cyclopentyl, cyclo-heptyl, lower alkoxyalkyl, -CH2COOH or -CH2CH2-S-C2H5; and (C) is not of the formula:


wherein X is CH2, O or S; R is H, lower alkyl or halogen; and Y is H, lower alkyl or halogen.

2. A method of controlling the growth of plants comprising applying ro the locus of such plants
a compound exhibiting an IC50 value of less than abour 50 nM in the inhibition of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in daffodil chromoplasts; with the proviso that said compound is:
(A) not of the formula:



wherein each of R 1, R2 and R3 is independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, and each of X and Y is independently hydrogen, halogen, nitro, acetamino, carboxyl, lower alkyl, methoxycar-bonyl, hydroxyl or merhoxy, and salts thereof; and
(B) is not of rhe formula


wherein R1 is H, alkyl, alkenyl or -CH2COOC2H5; R2 is H,
alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl or -CH2COOC2H5; and R3 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexylmerhyl, cyclopentyl, cyclo- heptyl, lower alkoxvalkvl, -CH2COOH or -CH2CH2-S-C2H5; and
(C) is not of the formula:

wherein X is CH2, O or S; R is H, lower alkyl or halogen; and Y is H, lower alkyl or halogen.

3. A method of assessing the herbicidal activity of a compound comprising measuring the IC50 value of the compound in the inhibition of farnesyl pyrophosphate.
