Claims

1. A closure device for an opening of a pressure member, the pressure member having an annular flange encircling the opening and a head having a mating surface on one side for abutment with the flange for closing the opening, the improvement characterized by; an annular movable support encircling the pressure member;
retractor means connected to the movable support for moving the movable support axially relative to a longitudinal axis of the pressure member between an engaging position and a releasing position;
a plurality of coil springs spaced around the pressure member, each of the coil springs having one end in engagement with the movable support for axial movement therewith;
a stationary support on the flange for stationarily supporting an opposite end of each of the springs, each of the springs biasing the movable support away from the stationary support and being further compressed when the retractor means moves the movable support to the releasing position;
hook means spaced around and carried by the movable support for axial movement therewith for lifting the head into abutment with the flange for closing the opening when the movable support is in the engaging position; and
adjusting means for adjusting the bias of each of the springs independently of the other springs.

2. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the adjusting means comprises: a plurality of adjusting rings, each mounted between one of the supports and one end of each of the springs; and
means for selectively and independently moving each of the adjusting rings relative to said one of the supports along an axis of each of the springs to increase and decrease the force of each of the springs.

3. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the adjusting means comprises:
a plurality of adjusting rings, each mounted between one of the supports and one end of each of the springs; and
means comprising a plurality of bolts threaded through said one of the supports into engagement with each of the adjusting rings, for selectively moving each of the adjusting rings relative to said one of the supports to more increase and decrease force of the each of the springs.

4. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the springs are evenly spaced around the pressure vessel.

5. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the stationary support is secured to the flange belwo9 the movable support and extends radially outward therefrom.

6. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the upper ends of the coil springs are in engagement with the movable support.

7. The closure device according to claim 1 wherein the retractor means comprises a plurality of hydraulic cylinders connected between the movable support and the stationary support.

8. A method for adjusting tightness for a closure device for an opening of a pressure member, the pressure member having an annular flange encircling the opening, the closure device having an annular movable support encircling the pressure member, retractor means connected to the movable support for moving the movable support axially relative to a longitudinal axis of the pressure member between an engaging position and a releasing position, a plurality of coil springs spaced around the pressure member, each of the coil springs having one end in engagement with the movable support for axial movement therewith, a stationary support on the flange for stationarily supporting an opposite end of each of the springs, each of the springs biasing the movable support away from the stationary support and being further compressed when the retractor means moves the movable support to the releasing position, a head having a mating surface on one side for abutment with the flange for closing the opening, and hook means spaced around and carried by the movable support for axial movement therewith for lifting the head into abutment with the flange for closing the opening when the movable support is in the engaging position, the method comprising:
adjusting the bias of each of the springs independently of the other springs.

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein the step of adjusting the bias comprises:
mounting an adjusting ring between one of the supports and one end of each of the springs; and
selectively and independently moving the adjusting rings relative to said one of the supports along an axis of each of the springs to increase and decrease the force of each of the springs independently of the other of the springs.
