1. Method for verifying the operating condition of a system for recovering vapours originating from the fuel tank of a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combus- tion engine, this system comprising a cartridge for recovering these vapours by filtering, placed in a vapour circuit connected, on the one hand, to the fuel tank and capable of being connected selectively, on the other hand, to the intake port of the engine, characterised in that the cartridge is selectively swept with a stream of gas originating from the exhaust of the engine, the intake port of this engine is supplied with the stream of gas after it has swept the cartridge, the richness in oxygen of the air/fuel mixture which then supplies the engine is measured, and the presence of a break in the vapour circuit is deduced from any exceeding of a predetermined value by the measured richness in oxygen.

Device for the implementation of the method according to Claim 1, characterised in that it comprises (a) means (21) for insulating the cartridge from the outside air and for connecting the vapour circuit ( 1, 3, 3') of the recovering- system, on the one hand, to the intake port (4) of the engine and, on the other hand, to an outlet line (11) for the exhaust gases from the engine so as to sweep at least the cartridge ( 1 ) with these 2gases under the effect of the suction developed in the intake port (4) of the engine, (b) means (10) for selectively activating these insulation and connection means, (c) means (18) for then measuring the richness in oxygen of the air/fuel mixture supplying the engine, and (d) means for comparing the measured richness with a predetermined value in order to deduce the presence of a break in the vapour circuit from any exceeding of this predetermined value by the measured richness in oxygen. 3. Device according to Claim 2, comprising means for the closed-loop regulation of the air/fuel mixture supplying the engine, characterised in that the said means for measuring the richness in oxygen of the air/fuel mixture comprise an oxygen probe (18) forming part of these regulation means.
4. Device according to Claim 2, characterised in that the means for connecting the vapour circuit to the outlet line for the exhaust gases from the engine comprise a duct (20) joining the outlet line for the exhaust gases to an air inlet ( 8 ) of the reprocessing cartridge (1), and a solenoid valve (21) controlled by the cal-culator ( 10 ) in order selectively to connect this duct (20) to the air inlet (8) of the cartridge by insulating it from the outside air.

Device according to Claim 2, characterised in that the means for connecting the vapour circuit to the outlet line for the exhaust gases from the engine comprise a duct (14) joining the outlet line for the exhaust gases to the space (15) situated above the fuel in the tank (2), so as to fill this space (15) and the vapour circuit (1, 3, 3') with exhaust gases under the suction developed in the intake port (4) of the engine.
6. Device according to Claim 5, characterised in that it comprises a solenoid valve ( 17 ) for selectively controlling the connection of the tank (2) to the exhaust line (11).
7. Device according to Claim 5, characterised in that the duct (14) is connected to the tank via an overpressure/depressurising valve ( 19 ) .
