CLAIMS :

T A terminator for a first transceiver device
(10) adapted to transmit data signals to and receive

data signals from a second transceiver device (12)
over a transmission line (14) therebetween, said
terminator including: transmitter means (25, 26)
connected to said transmission line (14) and adapted
to transmit data signals to said second transceiver
device (12); receiver means (30, 31) connected to said transmission line (14) and adapted to receive data
signals from said second transceiver device (12); and a termination resistor (R T_) connected to said
transmission line (14) and adapted to improve the
transmission characteristics of said transmission line (14), characterized by: switch means (38) connected
between said termination resistor (Rτι) and said
transmission line (14), said switch means (38) having a first, closed state wherein said termination
resistor (Rτι) is connected to said transmission line (14), and a second, open state wherein said
termination resistor is not connected to said
transmission line (14); and by control means (48)
coupled to said switch means (38) and adapted to place said switch means (38) in said first, closed state for a set portion of the time that said receiver means
(30, 31) is receiving data from said second
transceiver device (12).

2. A terminator according to claim 1
wherein said receiver means (30, 31) receives data
during a receive time, said control means including
timing means (48) adapted to generate a signal for a
set time after the start of said receive time, and
connection means between said timing means (48) and
said switch means (38) for changing said switch means (38) from its second state to its first state during the generation of said signal from said timing means (48).

3. A terminator according to claim 2, characterized in that said timing means includes a monostable multivibrator (48) , and said switch means includes a field effect transistor (38) having its gate connected to the output of said monostable multivibrator.

4. A terminator according to claim 2, characterized in that the set time of said timing device (48) is about twenty percent of the receive time of a data signal from said second transceiver device (12) .

A terminator according to claim 2, characterized in that said transmitter means (25, 26) is designed to transmit data signals from a CMOS device to an ECL device, and said receiver means (30, 31) is designed to receive data signals from an ECL device and translate them to signals for a CMOS device.

A terminator according to claim 5, characterized by pin means (32) , adapted to connect said terminator to said transmission line (14) , said termination resistor (R^T.) being included in said termination such that said pin means (32) is between said terminator resistor (Rτι) and the connected transmission line (14) .
