A peelable surface protecting film comprises a polymeric base layer and a layer of heat-activable adhesive composition. The adhesive composition comprises: (a) an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a content of the moiety derived from vinyl acetate monomer of more than 15 wt % or an ethylene-C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylate copolymer; (b) an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride moiety-containing ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride moiety-containing ethylene-C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylate copolymer; (c) 3-35 wt % of a tackifier; and (d) 4.5-30 wt % of a modifier selected from the group consisting of ethylene homopolymer. ethylene-α-olefin copolymer, propylene homopolymer, propylene copolymer, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a content of the moiety derived from vinyl acetate monomer of less than 15 wt % and a mixture of two or more thereof. Also disclosed is an article protected by the protecting film.
