PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound to be added to a liquid crystal composition to make it possible to ensure preservability and allow vertical orientation of liquid crystal molecules without the presence of a PI layer.

SOLUTION: A compound represented by formula (i) has a partial structure Ki1 represented by formulas (K-1) to (K-17), and has a ring B having at least two P-Sp-groups. Thus, when used in a liquid crystal composition, the compound is adsorbed onto a substrate holding the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer), can retain liquid crystal molecules in a state of being vertically oriented, and can ensure improved orientation stability and low-temperature preservability.

【課題】液晶組成物に添加した際に保存性を確保でき、PI層を設けなくとも液晶分子の垂直配向を可能にする化合物を提供すること。
【解決手段】本発明は、式(i)で表される化合物は、一般式(K−1)〜(K−17)で表される部分構造Ki1を有し、且つ、少なくとも2つのP−Sp−基を有する環Bを有する化合物であるため、液晶組成物に用いられた際に、液晶組成物(液晶層)を挟持する基板に吸着し、液晶分子を垂直方向に配向させた状態で保持することができ、配向性の安定性向上や、低温保存性を確保できる。
