CLAIMS
1. A stoppering device for a necked bottle comprising a closing stopper adapted to be fixed on the bottle neck, said stopper comprising a peripheral ring adapted to be severed from the said stopper; and a cap surmounting the said stopper, said cap comprising, on the one hand, first means operable to secure the cap to the said ring and, on the other hand, second means operable to secure the cap to the remainder of the stopper after the ring has been severed from the said remainder of the stopper.
2. A stoppering device according to claim 1, wherein said stopper is internally threaded to engage external threads on the bottle neck.
3. A stoppering device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the peripheral ring of the stopper is connected to the said stopper by at least one predetermined breakable zone.
4. A stoppering device according to claim 3, wherin the peripheral ring is fixed to the stopper by predetermined breakable connections regularly distributed around the circumference of the stopper.
5. A stoppering device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the said peripheral ring is coaxial with the stopper.
6. A stoppering device according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said first securing means is constituted by a groove and spline assembly of the said peripheral ring and by a corresponding groove and spline assembly of the cap.
7. A stoppering device according to claim 6, wherein the grooves and splines of the first securing means have a conical taper to effect axially locking the ring in relation to the cap during meshing of those splines and grooves.
8. A stoppering device according to one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the said first securing means comprise catch engagement formations of the cap and the ring, engageable to prevent relative rotation of the cap with respect to the ring.
9. A stoppering device according to claim 8, wherein said catch engagement formations on the cap and the ring comprise several projections on the cap or the ring, regularly distributed around the stopper axis, and corresponding regularly distributed recesses, of the ring or the cap, respectively.
10. A stoppering device according to one of Claims 1 to 9, wherin said first securing means has a part thereof formed on an external skirt of the cap.
11. A stoppering device according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein said first securing means has a part thereof formed on an inner sleeve of the cap, the said inner sleeve being surrounded by an external skirt disposed around the ring of the stopper.
1 2. A stoppering device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second securing means is constituted by an external groove and spline assembly of the stopper and by a corresponding internal groove and spline assembly of the cap.
1 3. A stoppering device according to claims 11 and 12, wherein said internal groove and spline assembly carried by the cap as part of the said second securing means is arranged on the internal wall of said inner sleeve of the cap.
1 4. A stoppering device according to either claim 1 2 or claim 13, wherein the grooves and splines of the said second securing means have a conical taper to ensure locking the cap axially in relation to the stopper.
1 5. A stoppering device according to any one of claims 11 to 13, and including an axial stop associated with the said second securing means for restricting the axial displacement of the cap in relation to the stopper, to an extent which is sufficient to ensure securing of the cap to the stopper.
1 6. A stoppering device according to claim 15, wherein the said axial stop is carried by the cap.
1 7. A stoppering device for a necked bottle, such stoppering device being constructed and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, or Figs. 4 and 5, of the accompanying drawings.

A method of stoppering a necked bottle of non-circular cross-section using a cap of non-circular cross-section, comprising: taking the stoppering device in accordance with claims 3 and 1 2 when taken together, the device being preassembled with said first securing means connecting the peripheral ring to the cap, the ring and the cap being of noncircular cross-section; fastening the stopper to the bottle neck; rotating the cap and the peripheral ring with respect to the bottle neck to sever the ring from the stopper; advancing the non-circular cross-section bottle between guides which hold the bottle against rotation about its axis while advancing the non-circular cross-section cap of the stoppering device between convergent guides which orientate the cap with respect to the non-circular crosssection bottle body; and then depressing the cap and ring in a direction axially of the bottle neck and towards the bottle body to engage said grooves and splines of the second securing means to complete the closing operation.
1 9. A container comprising a necked bottle stoppered by a stoppering device according to any one of claims 1 to 1 7 or by use of the method of claim 1 8.
