THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A process for preparing an alkoxymagnesium halide of general formula: ROMgX, wherein R represents a linear, branched or cyclic C1-20 hydrocarbon radical and X represents a halide; comprising: reacting magnesium, which has been preactivated by means of a small amount of an alkylmagnesium compound, stoichiometrically in a one-step reaction with an equimolar mixture of an alkyl halide of general formula:
R1X, wherein X is as defined above an R1 represents a linear, branched or cyclic C1-8 hydrocarbon radical, and an alkanol of general formula: R2OH, wherein R2 is as defined above for R, in an inert hydrocarbon solvent and under an inert gas atmosphere at 50 to 150°C.
2. The process of claim 1, wherein R and R2 have one to 18 carbon atoms.
3. The process of claim 2, wherein X is chloride.
4. The process of claim 3, wherein the alkanol is a β-branched alcohol.
5. The process of claim 4, wherein the β-branched alcohol has 5 to 18 carbons atoms.
6. The process of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the magnesium is preactivated with 5 mol% of the alkylmagnesium compound.
7. The process of claim 6, wherein the reaction temperature is 80 to 100°C.
8. The process of claim 4 or 5, wherein the βbranched alcohol is employed in an excess of 0.1 to 1.0 mol at the end of the reaction in order to reduce the viscosity.
