The invention concerns a vacuum retaining device with a suction chamber (12) open on a lateral face for exerting suction on a surface (2), where the suction chamber (12) is formed in a retaining plate (10) and can be evacuated via an opening (13) in the retaining plate (10), and with a seal arrangement (15) surrounding the suction chamber (12), which, when under vacuum, seals the space between the suction chamber (12) and the surface (2). The retaining plate (10) forms the outer wall of an evacuated container (1) which is disconnected from a vacuum source, and the suction chamber (12) can be connected to an evacuated inner chamber (14) of the container (1) by means of the opening (13). This retaining device is independent of the vacuum source. If the inner chamber of the container has been evacuated, then it can be connected to a surface any place. Vacuum lines to a vacuum source are no longer necessary, which improves and simplifies operation.
