ABSTRACT A steam generating furnace which burns high moisturecontent fuel has a panel of heat absorbing tubes dividing itinto two vertical interconnecting passageways: (a) a combustionchamber for burning the predried fuel and (b) a drying shaftfor extracting moisture from the fuel. Wet fuel is introducednear the top of the drying shaft. As it falls it is dried bysome of the hot gases diverted from the top of the combustionchamber into the top of the drying shaft. The cooling of thehot combustion gases due to evaporation of moisture from thewet fuel causes a difference in density between the gases inthe two passageways, creates a natural, unidirectional circulationof part of the combustion gases from the top of the combustionchamber to the drying shaft. Predrying the wet fuel causes thefuel to burn faster and hotter thereby producing a stable andefficient combustion of the wet fuel at higher specific combustionrates. Recirculation of the cooled drying gas through the combus-tion chamber reduces the generation and emission of particulateand gaseous pollutants.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Preparation of unsaturated acid derivitives from corresponding saturated compounds by condensation with formaldehyde is known. For example, U.S. Patent No. 3,701,798 disclosed the production of unsaturated acid derivatives through condensation with formaldehyde over catalysts containing rare earth oxides. U.S. Patent No. 3,014,958 discloses an improvement for making unsaturated esters from formaldehyde and other esters wherein the feed contains more than 7% of the desired unsaturated ester. Catalysts used in this reference are phosphates and mixed oxides. U.S. Patent No. 3,933,888, U.S. 3,578,702 and U.S. 4,165,438 all disclose reactions using formaldehyde over various oxide catalysts such as vanadium-phosphorus, metals of the lanthanide series, or metals found in Groups IIA and Group IIIA of the Periodic Table. 1.

PARTS FEEDING BOWL WITH ORIENTING MEANS Abstract of Disclosure Apparatus is disclosed for accepting an initially pre- sented population of randomly oriented elongated slender articles which terminate in an enlarged head portion, and pro- viding a high-speed output stream, wherein all said articles are commonly oriented for further mechanical manipulation. The apparatus comprises an input bowl for accepting the art- icles, which bowl includes a rotatable central disk for feeding objects incident thereupon to the periphery of the disk. A continuous wall member extends upwardly from the disk periph- ery about a major arced zone, the bottom of the wall member being spaced from the disk to define a gap through which the elongated portion of the articles may protrude while the heads of same continue to ride upon the disk periphery in sliding contact with the side wall. An output section defined adjacent the periphery of the disk at the portion opposed to the arced zone receives and delivers the articles from the disk. A con- tinuous conveying band extends about the periphery of the disk and moves with the articles in the direction of disk rotation at the arced zone. The band separates from the disk peripheral edge beyond the arced zone and extends into the output section. Means cooperate with the band at the output section to constrain the articles between the band and constraining means, whereby the articles are conveyed into the output section. The band diverges from the cooperating means at the end of the output section to release the constrained articles for further mechan- ical manipulation.

The vessel has a refractory lining and the method includes the steps of inserting a dense refractory nozzle block into the nozzle well, heating the vessel to its operating temperature, fixing a dual concentric tuyere having a central conduit and an outer annular conduit in the nozzle block, fixing a nozzle closure apparatus to the exterior of the vessel and connecting the conduits each to a separate source of gas. Upon completion of the metallurgical treatment process the tuyere may be removed from the nozzle well leaving a pouring opening controllable by the nozzle closure apparatus.
