The invention relates to a process for working bovine hides, characterized by the fact that the hides organically tanned with resorcine and melamine-formaldehyde resin are retanned by immersion into a concentrated solution of high basicity basic chrome salts, at a temperature ranging from 25 to 40 for 15-60 min and after resting for 24 h and squeezing, the hides are finished in known conditions. The hides worked thereby have the following characteristics: 17.06 % moisture, 3% ash, 122.25%, 2.25% Cr2O3; 5.42% extractible fatty substances, shrinkage temperature of leather of more than 100 C ; a stretching resistence of 22.72 N/mm2 ; elongation at break of 33%, tear resistance of 134N/mm, porosity of 14.7%. By using the claimed process one can ensure both the chromed leather character at a reduced chrome content in leather and implicitly in effluents and a higher efficiency in using the surface.
