Abstract:
 An exhaust purification device for an internal combustion engine is provided with a hydrocarbon supply valve, disposed in an engine exhaust gas passage, and an exhaust gas purification catalyst for reacting modified hydrocarbon and NOx contained in exhaust gas. The exhaust gas purification catalyst has properties which can reduce the NOx if the concentration of the hydrocarbon flowing in is made to oscillate within a pre-defined amplitude range and within a pre-defined period range, and has properties whereby the NOx occlusion amount increases if the oscillation period of the hydrocarbon concentration is made to be longer than a pre-defined range. During a time period when the hydrocarbon is being supplied from the hydrocarbon supply valve at an amplitude which is within a pre-defined range and in a period which is within a pre-defined range, if the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbed to the exhaust gas purification catalyst exceeds a pre-defined adsorption amount determination amount, at least one among a control for reducing the hydrocarbon supply amount and a control for increasing the hydrocarbon supply interval is carried out.
