Claims
1.           A crystalline form of obeticholic acid characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0 and 5.3 degrees 2-theta.
2.           The crystalline form of claim 1 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0, 5.3 and 7.7 degrees 2-theta.
3.           The crystalline form of claim 2 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0, 5.3, 7.7, and 10.0 degrees 2-theta.
4.           The crystalline form of claim 3 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0, 5.3, 7.7, 10.0, and 11.0 degrees 2-theta.
5.           The crystalline form of claim 4 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0, 5.3, 7.7, 10.0, 11.0, and 12.4 degrees 2-theta.
6.           The crystalline form of claim 5 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern comprising peaks at about 5.0, 5.3, 7.7, 10.0, 11.0, 12.4, and 14.9 degrees 2-theta.
7.           The crystalline form of claim 1 characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern substantially similar to Figure 41.
8.           The crystalline form of claim 7, wherein the X-ray powder diffraction pattern is collected on a diffractometer using Cu Ku radiation.
9.           The crystalline form of claim 1 having a purity of greater than about 96%.
10.         The crystalline form of claim 9 having a purity of greater than about 98%.
11.         The crystalline form of claim 1 having a total of less than about 4% of one or more impurities selected 6-ethylursodeoxycholic acid, 3a-hydroxy-6a-ethyl-7-cheto-5p cholan-24-oic acid, 6p-ethylchenodeoxycholic acid, 3a,7a-dihy droxy=-6-ethvliden-5p cholan-24-oic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and 3a(3a,7a-dihydroxy-6a-ethyl-5p cholan-24-oyloxy)-7a-hydroxy-6a-ethyl-5p-cholan-24-oic acid.
12.         The crystalline form of claim 11, wherein the total percentage of impurities is less than about 3.8%.
13.         The crystalline form of claim 11, wherein the total percentage of impurities is less than about 3.6%.
14.         A crystalline form of obeticholic acid, wherein the crystalline form is selected from the group consisting of D, F, G, and I.
15.         The crystalline form of claim 14, wherein the crystalline form is Form D and characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern including peaks at about 4.4, 5.2 and 7.5 degrees 2-Theta.
16.         The crystalline form of claim 15, wherein the crystalline form is characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern substantially similar to that set forth in Figure 45.
17.         The crystalline form of claim 14, wherein the crystalline form is Form F and characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern including peaks at about 8.0, 13.2, and 13.8 degrees 2-Theta.
18.         The crystalline form of claim 17, wherein the crystalline form is characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern substantially similar to that set forth in Figure 49.
19.         The crystalline form of claim 14, wherein the crystalline form is Form G and characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern including peaks at about 12.9 and 13.4 degrees 2-Theta.
20.         The crystalline form of claim 19 wherein the crystalline form is characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern substantially similar to that set forth in Figure 53.
21.         The crystalline form of claim 14, wherein the crystalline form is Form I and characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern including a peak at about 7.2 degrees 2 Theta.
