Claims

1. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solvent selected from the group consisting of C13PNS02C1,
C13PNP(0)C12, C13PNCH3 and C13PNCH2CH3.

2. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution which comprises :
(a) an electrolyte solute, and
(b) a sulfonyl/phospho compound electrolyte
solvent according to:
formula (I)

wherein X is a halide, and
R is selected from the group consisting of an
alkyl group, a perfluorinated alkyl group, a
perchlorinated alkyl group, and -N=PX3, on
formula (II) :

wherein X is a halide, and R is -P(0)X2 or a 1-6 carbon alkyl group,
wherein the mole fraction of the electrolyte
solute is less than 0.5.

3. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution according to claim 2, wherein the electrolyte
solute is a lithium salt .

. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution according to claim 3 , which comprises a
sulfonyl/phospho compound electrolyte solvent according to formula (I) which is selected from
the group consisting of C13PNS02C1, CH3S02C1 and
CF3(CF2)3S02F.

5. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution
according to claim 3 , which comprises a
sulfonyl/phospho compound electrolyte solvent
according to formula (II) which is selected from
the group consisting of C13PNP (0) Cl2, C13PNCH3 or
CljPNCH2CH3 .

6. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution
according to claim 3, wherein the lithium salt is
selected from the group consisting of LiAlCl4 and
LiN(S02CF3)2.

7. A sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution
according to claim 3 , wherein the
sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solvent
further comprises up to 15% by weight of a high
molecular weight polymer.

8. An electrochemical device which comprises a
sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solution
comprising:
(a) an electrolyte solute, and
(b) a sulfonyl/phospho compound electrolyte
solvent according to:
formula (I)

R is selected from the group consisting of an

wherein the mole fraction of the electrolyte
solute is less than 0.5.

9. An electrochemical device according to claim 8, wherein the electrolyte solute is a lithium salt .

10. An electrochemical device according to claim 9, wherein the sulfonyl/phospho-compound electrolyte solvent further comprises up to 15% by weight of a high molecular weight polymer.
