An X-ray apparatus comprises an anode (11) that generates heat during operation of the X-ray apparatus; and a cooling device in thermal communication with the anode to transfer the heat from the anode. The cooling device has water flowing in it, as a coolant, and comprises a pressure generator that maintains the water at more than 1.1, preferably >=10 bars, in a region of the anode, during the operation of the X-ray apparatus, a housing (12) that surrounds the anode, and a hollow space (15) inside the rotary anode through which the water flows. An independent claim is included for a method of cooling an anode of an X-ray apparatus.
