Claims:

1 . A security cover houses a switch and includes an authorisation device for enabling an authorised person to control a power supply, via the switch, to an electrical device or appliance, has an input means to an authorisation device which outputs a local authorisation signal which when authenticated configures the switch in an operative state, so that the power supply is able to be connected to, and disconnected from, the device or appliance in response to a command signal wherein the cover is included in an electrical plug.

2. A security cover houses a switch and includes an authorisation device for enabling an authorised person to control a power supply, via the switch, to an electrical device or appliance, has an input means to an authorisation device which outputs a local authorisation signal which when authenticated configures the switch in an operative state, so that the power supply is able to be connected to, and disconnected from, the device or appliance in response to a command signal wherein the security cover surrounds and encloses an electrical plug.

3. A security cover houses a switch and includes an authorisation device for enabling an authorised person to control a power supply, via the switch, to an electrical device or appliance, has an input means to an authorisation device which outputs a local authorisation signal which when authenticated configures the switch in an operative state, so that the power supply is able to be connected to, and disconnected from, the device or appliance in response to a command signal wherein the security cover includes a socket.

4. A security cover houses a switch and includes an authorisation device for enabling an authorised person to control a power supply, via the switch, to an electrical device or appliance, has an input means to an authorisation device which outputs a local authorisation signal which when authenticated configures the switch in an operative state, so that the power supply is able to be connected to, and disconnected from, the device or appliance in response to a command signal wherein the security cover is a plate arranged over a hardwired power supply.

5. A security cover according to any of claims 1 to 4 includes an override device provided for overriding the command signal so that a permission signal is required from a supervisor in order to configure the switch in its operative state.

6. A security cover according to any preceding claim including an identification means which identifies the cover in a network; and a communication means which is operative to relay an identity signal from the identification means to a remote location.

7. A security cover according to claim 6 when dependent on claim 5, wherein the communication means is operative to receive the permission signal from a remote location.

8. A security cover according to any preceding claim including an identification means which identifies the cover in a network; and a communication means which is operative to relay an authorisation signal from a remote location, which when authenticated, configures the switch in an operative state.

9. A security cover according to any preceding claim wherein the security cover has an on/off indicator that indicates that the authorisation unit has been authorised.

10. A security cover according to any preceding claim wherein the security cover has an on/off indicator that indicates when the switch is switched on to connect the power supply and when the switch is switched off to disconnect the power supply.

1 1 . A security cover according to any preceding claim wherein the authorisation device includes a biometric sensor.

12. A security cover according to claim 1 1 wherein the biometric sensor is a fingerprint identifier.

13. A security cover according to claim 12 wherein the biometric sensor comprises a microphone and transducer for providing an authentication signal which is indicative of a voice pattern.

14. A security cover according to any preceding claim, wherein the authorisation device includes a keypad which outputs an authentication signal when a correct code is input on the keypad.

15. A security cover according to any preceding claim, wherein the authorisation device includes an imaging means.

16. A security cover according to any preceding claim, wherein the authorisation device is a fob or smartcard.

17. A security cover according to any preceding claim includes at least one battery for powering internal components of the device.

18. A security cover according to any preceding claim includes a power conversion circuit for supplying current to components of the device from the power supply.

19. A security cover according to any preceding claim includes a memory

20. A security cover according to any preceding claim includes an indicator which indicates when the security cover is in communication with a network.

21 . A security cover according to any preceding claim includes a timer.

22. A system includes a plurality of covers according to any preceding claim and a controller which is located remotely and is operative to communicate with at least one cover.

23. A security cover according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the authorisation device includes a lock.

24. A method of operating an electrical appliance comprising a security cover according to any of claims 1 to 23 including the steps of: inserting a plug connected to the electrical appliance into a socket; switching on a switch if present at the socket; authorising the security cover; and switching on the electrical appliance.

25. A method of operating an electrical appliance comprising a security cover according to claim 2, including the steps of inserting the plug of the electrical appliance into a lockable enclosure; entrapping the plug in the lockable enclosure; communicating with the electrical plug security cover via the communication means; inserting the plug, connected to the electrical appliance into a socket; switching on a switch if present at the socket; authorising the security cover; and switching on the electrical appliance.

26. A plug for connection to an appliance has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a biometric sensor located on the plug.

27. A socket into which a plug is inserted the socket has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a biometric sensor located on the socket.

28. A plate for covering a hardwired power supply has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a biometric sensor located on the plate.

29. A plug for connection to an appliance has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a fob or smartcard.

30. A socket into which a plug is inserted the socket has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a fob or smartcard.

31 . A plate for covering a hardwired power supply has a switch which is enabled upon receipt of a signal from a fob or smartcard.
