The invention relates to a process for chlorine-free bleaching of chemical pulp in association with the production thereof, where a suspension of the pulp preferably has a concentration exceeding 8 % of cellulose-containing fibre material and where the pulp entering into a bleaching line is preferably fed continuously through at least one bleaching vessel in the bleaching line, is treated with at least one acid for adjusting the pH to a value below 7, and with a chelating agent, and is subsequently bleached in at least one stage to a brightness exceeding 75 % ISO, preferably exceeding 80 %, with hydrogen peroxide or the corresponding quantity of another peroxide, employed in a quantity exceeding 5 kg/BDMT, where the peroxide bleaching takes place at elevated temperature and at a pressure in the bleaching vessel, said pressure in each point of the vessel exceeding the vapour pressure of the liquid in the suspension and where the cross-sectional area of the bleaching vessel exceeds 3 m² and the area of the metal surface exposed towards the interior of the bleaching vessel is less than 4V m², where V indicates the volume in m³.

The performance of a gas-fueled unthrottled internal combustion engine (10) improved by optimizing excess air ratio (lambda) in the engine. Lambda is optimized by selecting automatically and continuously the optimum fraction of cylinders (12) firing (OFF) as a function of engine operating parameters, eliminating the fuel charge from one or more cylinders to obtain firing in the OFF, and distributing the unused fuel to the OFF, thereby decreasing lambda in the firing cylinders to an optimum level. OFF may be calculated according to mathematically derived and empirically weighted equations, or obtained with reference to suitable look-up tables. In addition, optimum lambda and OFF may be adjusted to take into account the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (egr), engine speed, and/or engine timing. Further lambda adjustment can be performed by suitable control of egr, ignition timing, and/or turbo air bypass (TAB).

Disclosed is a process for wet oxidation treatment of high strength liquor or wastewater to destroy a substantial portion of the pollutants and produce an effluent stream containing a high solids content for recovery or disposal. The liquor is treated by wet oxidation and separate vapor and liquid streams are removed from the wet oxidation reactor. The vapor stream is cooled and separated to give a liquid condensate phase and a gaseous phase. The liquid stream from the reactor is cooled and divided, with a portion of the liquid effluent sent to recovery or disposal, and a portion combined with the condensate phase. This low pollutant content stream is used to dilute the raw feed liquor and maintain a high solids concentration in the liquid effluent stream.

The element protector control (9) and the steam sensor (10) are located in a bottom part of the vessel which is compartmentalized so as to segregate the potentially wetted environment of the steam sensor (10) from the element protector control (9) and thereby avoid electrical problems.
