The apparatus detect when the LCD display (10) is not being used, generates a voltage V_g', of opposite polarity with respect to V_g when the LCD display is not being used, and applies V_g' to the gates of the transistors (12) of the LCD display (10) for causing V_th to shift in a direction opposite to that caused by V_g, thereby maintaining an effective driving voltage for the transistor (12) of the LCD display (10).

Binary data is encrypted or decrypted using a final key. The final key is formed by manipulating one or more user keys and a base key, and combining the manipulated keys using an exclusive-OR operation. The data to be encrypted or decrypted are combined with the final key using a circular exclusive-OR operation. The user and base keys are binary sequences having any number of bits. The user key may be input to the present invention directly in binary form or in any other suitable form that the present invention can interpret as a binary sequence, such as a string of ASCII-encoded alphanumeric characters. Manipulating the user key includes the steps of shuffling or permuting segments of the user key, such as bytes, circularly shifting the permuted user key by a number of bit positions, and filling a location with one or more copies of the permuted and shifted key such that the result has a length equal to that of the base key. The ordering of the segments of the user key in the permutation step and the number of bit positions by which the user key is shifted in the shifting step are determined in response to the value and position of the segments of the user key itself. Manipulating the base key includes the step of circularly shifting the base key by a number of bit positions that is determined in response to the value and position of segments of the user key.

A method and system for the production of energy-providing fuels, and particularly methanol or methanol-based derivatives, is disclosed. The system includes a methanol synthesis unit (20) that receives a supply of coal (116) and a supply of oxygen (114) from which methanol or a methanol-based fuel is synthesized and excess carbon dioxide is produced. A photovoltaic cell system (2) generates a DC power supply (102) that is provided to an electrolysis system (4) receiving a supply of water (104) to generate a further supply of oxygen (108) and a supply of hydrogen (106). The photovoltaic cell system (2) and electrolysis (4) can be located remotely from the methanol synthesis unit (20). The supply of hydrogen is transported by a pipeline (110) to a methanol production unit (16) that also receives the supply (112) of excess carbon dioxide. The methanol production unit (16) is located at the site of the methanol synthesis unit (20), and produces further methanol or a methanol-based fuel.

The proposed device for the magnetic treatment of a liquid is intended primarily for the batch treatment of small volumes of water in domestic and industrial conditions. The treatment is carried out in a beaker by the reciprocating motion of a number of magnetised discs which cover virtually the entire cross section of the beaker. The discs are attached either to a central shaft or to the wall of an inner beaker fitted inside the main beaker and capable of sliding. When the discs are displaced along the axis, the liquid in the space between the discs is also displaced in a radial direction perpendicular to the lines of magnetic force. This cycle of flow and magnetic treatment of the liquid is maintained by providing the discs with perforations which alternate in successive discs between the central area and the circumference. Liquid is displaced in a direction perpendicular to the vertical lines of magnetic force if the magnet is arranged coaxially in the beaker in the gap between discs made of a ferromagnetic material which act as the pole ends of the magnet, or alternatively, if each disc is a magnet. Liquid is similarly displaced in a direction perpendicular to the horizontal lines of magnetic force if the magnet is arranged coaxially with the beaker in the gap between the discs, but in this case the magnet is ring-shaped with side channels to allow liquid to pass and the magnet pole is located on opposing walls of each channel. In this case, the discs are made of non-magnetic material.
