CLAIMS

1. A system comprising:

an aerosol generating device comprising a receptacle for receiving an elongate aerosol generating article, the aerosol generating article comprising a solid aerosol forming substrate, the aerosol generating device further comprising an elongate heating element extending into the receptacle and configured to penetrate the aerosol generating article and contact the aerosol forming substrate when the article is received in the receptacle of the device; and

a heat diffuser removably receivable in the receptacle of the device, the heat diffuser comprising a thermally conductive body defining a cavity for receiving the elongate heating element of the device when the heat diffuser is received in the receptacle of the device, wherein the body has a top and a bottom and a plurality of discrete air passageways extending from the bottom to the top.

2. A system according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate heating element contacts the body of the heat diffuser when the heating element is received in the cavity.

3. A system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the air passages of the body of the heat diffuser are substantially linear.

4. A system according to claim 3, wherein the body of the heat diffuser has a longitudinal axis between the top and the bottom and the passageways extend substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the body.

5. A system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the passageways of the body of the heat diffuser are substantially cylindrical.

6. A system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the body of the heat diffuser

comprises a central portion and a plurality of fins extending from the central portion, wherein the plurality of air passageways are defined between the fins.

7. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the top of the body of the heat diffuser is substantially not planar.

8. A system according to any one of the preceding claims,

wherein a periphery of the top surface of the body of the heat diffuser is configured to contact an aerosol generating article when the article is received in the receptacle of the aerosol generating device, and

wherein an interior portion of the top surface of the heat diffuser is configured to be positioned a distance from the aerosol generating article when the article is received in the receptacle of the aerosol generating device.

9. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the top of the body of the heat diffuser is concave.

10. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a thermally conductive element extending from the top of the body of the heat diffuser, wherein the thermally conductive element is configured to penetrate into an aerosol generating article.

11. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the body has an outer diameter substantially the same as an inner diameter of the receptacle of the device.

12. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the body is configured to engage the receptacle of the aerosol generating device by an interference fit.

13. A system according to claims any one of the preceding claims, wherein when the heat diffuser is received in the receptacle of the device, the receptacle is configured to receive an aerosol generating article different from the aerosol generating article configured to be received when the heat diffuser is not received in the receptacle.

14. A system according to claim 13, wherein the aerosol generating article configured to be received by the receptacle when the heat diffuser is not received in the receptacle comprises a relatively longer rod comprising the aerosol forming substrate, and wherein the aerosol generating article configured to be received by the receptacle when the heat diffuser is received in the receptacle comprises a relatively shorter rod comprising the aerosol forming substrate.

15. A system according to claim 13, wherein the aerosol generating article configured to be received by the receptacle when the heat diffuser is received in the receptacle comprises an aerosol forming substrate configured to be heated without a heating element penetrating the aerosol forming substrate.
