Claims

What is claimed is:

1. A method of regulating the operation of an electrical system (1000, the electrical system (100) including, at least one contactor unit (102) including a contactor (106) and a conductive element (104); sensing circuitry (111) including at least two Hall Effect sensors; and a control unit (110) including at least a trip circuit (126), an I2t unit (120), and at least one coil current monitor (130), the method comprising:

receiving, by the control unit (110), one or more first measurements, from the sensing circuitry (111);

determining, by the control unit (110), a current corresponding to a current in the at least one conductive element (104) based on the one or more first measurements;

determining, by the control unit (110), an instantaneous power generated by a load (108) based on the current; and

regulating, by the control unit (110), the operation of the at least one contactor unit (102) based on the power generated by the load (108).

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the contactor (106) includes an electromechanical switch.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one control circuit (110) includes a trip circuit (126) and a reset circuit (128).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein regulating the operation of the at least one contactor (106) includes switching between a first operating mode and a second operating mode.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the first operating mode includes energizing the load (108).

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the second operating mode includes de-energizing the load (108).

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first measurement includes a voltage measurement corresponding at least in part to a current in the at least one conductive element (104).

8. An electrical system (100), comprising:

a conductive element (104) configured to transfer a current between a power source and a load (108);

a contactor (106) electrically coupled to the conductive element (104) and configured to regulate the current in the conductive element (104);

a sensing circuit (111) comprising at least two Hall Effect sensors; and a control unit (110) configured to regulate the operation of the contactor (106).

9. The electrical system (100) of claim 8, wherein the control unit (110) further comprises a coil current monitor (130) comprising at least one current sensor.

10. The electrical system (100) of claim 8, wherein regulate the operation of the contactor (106) includes regulating a current to a coil of the contactor (106).

11. The electrical system (100) of claim 10, wherein the current to the coil exceeds the pick up current of the contactor (106).
