A HANGI NG APPARATUS

The present invention relates to a hanging apparatus; in particular a hanging apparatus that can be attached to a surface to enable hanging of picture frames, mirrors, coats and other objects.

Picture frames, mirrors and coats are traditionally hung on a wall using a hook that is attached to the wall. The hanging of picture frames or mirrors can be particularly troublesome as the act of lifting the picture frame or mirror up to hang it obscures the hanger's view of the hook and so they have to blindly attempt to position and move the picture frame or mirror on to the hook. As the hook is positioned flat against the wall, it is often difficult to detect when the hook cooperating component of the picture frame or mirror has made contact with the hook when the hook is visibly obscured by the object to be hung. The problem is further exacerbated if the object is heavy and/or if the user has a paucity of physical strength. There is therefore a requirement for a novel apparatus that provides a simple way to easily hang objects to a hook on a wall.

It is an object of the present invention to mitigate the problem of hanging picture frames, mirrors, coats and other objects to walls by providing a hanging apparatus that can be easily operated when visibly obscured by the object to be hung.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a hanging apparatus comprising a means for mounting the hanging apparatus to a surface and a means for securing and locating an object, wherein the means for securing and locating an object is moveable between a first position and a second position relative to the means for mounting the hanging apparatus to a surface.

Advantageously, the ability to move the securing and locating means between a first position and a second position enables the user to easily locate the securing and locating means whilst hanging an object to the hanging apparatus.

Ideally, the securing and locating means is removably attachable to the surface mounting means.

Preferably, the hanging apparatus is formed at least partially from plastic.

Ideally, the securing and locating means comprises a primary hook for hanging objects or other such form to which an object can be hung, attached, fastened or otherwise secured. By other such from we mean a component which can carry out the function of the hook but does not have a typical hook shape such as a carbine hook or multiple arm hook arrangement.

Preferably, the securing and locating means comprises an elongate non-planar member.

Preferably, the elongate non-planar member is between 15 mm and 120 mm.

More preferably, the elongate non-planar member is between 65 mm and 85 mm.

Ideally, the elongate non-planar member comprises the primary hook or other such form to which an object can be hung at or about one end.

Preferably, the hanging apparatus comprises a grip means.

Ideally, the grip means is located on the securing and locating means.

More preferably, the grip means is located on the primary hook or other such form.

Ideally, the grip means is located on the primary hook or other such form at or about a free end of the hook or other such form.

Ideally, the grip means comprises at least one flange.

Preferably, the at least one flange projects outwards from the primary hook or other such form.

Ideally, the at least one flange projects laterally outwards from the primary hook or other such form.

Preferably, the grip means comprises a pair of mutually opposing flanges.

Ideally, the grip means comprises a pair of mutually opposing flanges each projecting outwards from the primary hook or other such form.

Preferably, the grip means comprises a pair of mutually opposing flanges each projecting laterally outwards from the primary hook or other such form.

Ideally, the operator, using one or more fingers, can locate the grip means and pull the grip means outwards thereby causing the securing and locating means to move relative to the surface mounting means.

Preferably, the hanging apparatus has a means for movably attaching the surface mounting means and the securing and locating means together.

Ideally, the movably attaching means comprises a movement restrictor means for fixing the securing and locating means in at least one position relative to the surface mounting means.

Preferably, the movement restrictor means fixes the securing and locating means in a position projecting laterally outwards from the surface when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ on the surface.

Ideally, the movement restrictor means fixes the securing and locating means in a position projecting laterally outwards between 45° and 135° relative to the surface when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ on the surface.

Preferably, the movement restrictor means fixes the securing and locating means in a position projecting laterally outwards between 70° and 1 10° relative to the surface when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ on the surface.

Ideally, the movement restrictor means fixes the securing and locating means in a position being downward substantially parallel to the surface when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ on the surface.

Preferably, the movement restrictor means fixes the securing and locating means in a position being downward parallel to the surface when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ on the surface.

Ideally, the moveably attaching means comprises a component on the surface mounting means and a co-operating component on the securing and locating means.

Preferably, the component on the surface mounting means is a pivot means or a secondary hook.

Ideally, the co-operating component on the securing and locating means is a pivot means or a secondary hook.

Preferably, the secondary hook co-operates with the pivot means.

Ideally, the secondary hook comprises an opening for receiving the pivot means.

Preferably, the moveably attaching means enables the securing and locating means to move between at least the first position and the second position relative to the surface mounting means when the hanging apparatus is mounted in situ on the surface.

Ideally, the moveably attaching means is located at a distance between 10 mm to 85 mm from the primary hook or other such form.

More preferably, the moveably attaching means is located at a distance between 25 mm to 55 mm from the primary hook or other such form.

Ideally, the pivot means is a pivotal bar.

Ideally, the pivotal bar is spaced apart from the surface where the hanging apparatus is mounted thereon.

Preferably, the pivotal bar is spaced at a sufficient distance from the surface to allow the securing and locating means to rotate between at least the first and the second position.

Ideally, the surface mounting means comprises a surface mounting area.

Preferably, the surface mounting area can be fastened, fixed or mounted to a surface. Ideally, the surface mounting area is substantially planar.

Preferably, the surface mounting area is located above, below and/or to either side of the pivot means and/or secondary hook when the hanging apparatus is fixed to a surface in situ.

Preferably, the surface mounting area comprises a means for receiving a fastener and/or a means for receiving adhesive substances.

Ideally, the fastener receiving means comprises at least one location where a fastener can overlap with and/or be inserted.

In one embodiment, the fastener receiving means comprises at least one location that has a reduced thickness and/or density and can therefore receive a fastener more easily than the surrounding material.

In another embodiment, the fastener receiving means comprises an aperture or a plurality of apertures.

Preferably, the aperture or plurality of apertures are sized to receive fasteners.

In one embodiment, the surface mounting area comprises a single aperture sized to receive a screw or nail or pin.

In another embodiment, the surface mounting area comprises a plurality of apertures sized to receive nails or pins.

In another embodiment, the surface mounting area comprises an aperture sized to receive a screw and one or more apertures sized to receive one or more nails or pins.

Ideally, a range and/or plurality of fasteners and/or adhesives can be used to fasten the hanging apparatus to a surface.

Advantageously, different fasteners and/or adhesives will change the aesthetic appearance and/or the hanging strength of the hanging apparatus.

Preferably, the hanging apparatus has a means for spacing the pivotal bar a distance apart from the surface.

Ideally, the spacing means comprises at least one flange projecting outwardly from the plane of the surface mounting area.

Preferably, the spacing means comprises at least one flange projecting outwardly from, and substantially perpendicular to, the plane of the surface mounting area.

Ideally, the spacing means comprises a pair of mutually opposing flanges projecting in the same direction from the plane of the surface mounting area with the pivotal bar extending therebetween.

Preferably, the spacing means comprises a pair of mutually opposing flanges projecting in the same direction from the plane of the surface mounting area with the pivotal bar extending therebetween substantially perpendicular to the flanges.

In one embodiment, the moveable attachment means is located below the surface mounting area when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ to a surface.

Ideally, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located below the surface mounting area is between 2.5 kilograms and 20 kilograms.

More preferably, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located below the surface mounting area is between 5 kilograms and 15 kilograms.

More ideally, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located below the surface mounting area is between 7.5 kilograms and 12.5 kilograms.

In another embodiment, the moveable attachment means is located above the surface mounting area when the hanging apparatus is fixed in situ to a surface.

Ideally, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located above the surface mounting area is between 2.5 kilograms and 15 kilograms.

More preferably, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located above the surface mounting area is between 3 kilograms and 12.5 kilograms.

More ideally, the maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus when the moveable attachment means is located above the surface mounting area is between 5 kilograms and 10 kilograms.

Advantageously, the user can detach the securing and locating means from the surface mounting means and alter between these embodiments to select the desired location of the moveable attachment means relative to the surface mounting area.

The skilled man will appreciate that all preferred or optional features of the invention described with reference to only some aspects or embodiments of the invention may be applied to all aspects of the invention.

It will be appreciated that optional features applicable to one aspect of the invention can be used in any combination, and in any number. Moreover, they can also be used with any of the other aspects of the invention in any combination and in any number. This includes, but is not limited to, the dependent claims from any claim being used as dependent claims for any other claim in the claims of this application.

The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show by way of example only four embodiments of hanging apparatuses in

accordance with the invention.

In the drawings, there is shown a hanging apparatus indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 having an apparatus 2 for mounting the hanging apparatus to a surface and an apparatus 3 for securing and locating an object. The securing and locating apparatus 3 is moveable between a first position and a second position relative to the surface mounting apparatus 2. Advantageously, the ability to move the securing and locating apparatus 3 between a first position and a second position enables the user to easily locate the securing and locating apparatus 3 whilst hanging an object to the hanging apparatus 1 . The securing and locating apparatus 3 is removably attachable to the surface mounting apparatus 2. The hanging apparatus 1 is formed from plastic or a composite material.

The securing and locating apparatus 3 has a primary hook 4 to which an object can be hung and an elongate non-planar member 5. The elongate non-planar member 5 has a cranked portion. The primary hook 4 is at one end of the elongate non-planar member 5.The hanging apparatus 1 has a grip arrangement 30 located on the primary hook 4. The grip arrangement has a pair of mutually opposing flanges 31 each projecting laterally outwards from the primary hook 4. The operator, using one or more fingers, can locate the grip arrangement 30 and pull the grip arrangement 30outwards thereby causing the securing and locating apparatus 3 to move relative to the surface mounting apparatus 2. The hanging

apparatus 1 has an arrangement 6 for movably attaching the surface mounting apparatus 2 and the securing and locating apparatus 3 together. The moveable attachment arrangement 6 has a movement restrictor arrangement 7 for fixing the securing and locating apparatus 3 in at least one position. The movement restrictor arrangement 7 fixes the securing and locating apparatus 3 in a position projecting laterally outwards between 70° and 1 10° relative to the surface when the hanging apparatus 1 is fixed in situ on the surface. The movement restrictor arrangement 7 also fixes the securing and locating apparatus 3 in a position being downward substantially parallel to the surface when the hanging apparatus 1 is fixed in situ on the surface. The moveable attachment arrangement 6 has a pivotal bar 8 on the surface mounting apparatus 2 and a secondary hook 9 on the securing and locating apparatus 3. The secondary hook 9 co-operates with the pivotal bar 8. The secondary hook has an opening 10 for receiving the pivotal bar 8. The moveable attachment arrangement 6 enables the securing and locating apparatus 3 to move between at least the first position and the second position relative to the surface mounting apparatus 2 when the hanging apparatus 1 is mounted in situ on the surface. The moveable attachment arrangement is located at a distance of around 40 mm from the primary hook. The pivotal bar 8 is spaced apart from the surface where the hanging apparatus 1 is mounted thereon at a sufficient distance from the surface to allow the securing and locating apparatus 3 to rotate between at least the first and the second position.

The surface mounting apparatus 2 has a surface mounting area 17 which can be fastened, fixed or mounted to a surface. The surface mounting area 17 is substantially planar. In Figures 1 to 36 there is shown an embodiment of the hanging apparatus 1 according to the present invention wherein the surface mounting area 17 is located below the pivotal bar 8 and secondary hook 9 when the hanging apparatus 1 is fixed to a surface in situ. In Figures 37 to 50 there is shown an embodiment of the hanging apparatus 1 according to the present invention wherein the surface mounting area 17 is located above the pivotal bar 8 and secondary hook 9 when the hanging apparatus 1 is fixed to a surface in situ. The surface mounting area 17 has an area for receiving one or more fasteners and/or an area for receiving an adhesive substance. In Figures 2 to 4, 6 to 9, 1 1 to 14, 42 to 45, and 47 to 50 there is shown an embodiment of a hanging apparatus 1 according to the present invention with a surface mounting area 17 with an aperture 18 sized to receive a screw. In Figures 15 to 25 there is shown an embodiment of a hanging apparatus 1 according to the present invention with a surface mounting area 17 with three apertures 19 each sized to receive a nail or a pin. In Figures 26 to 36 there is shown an embodiment of a hanging apparatus 1 according to the present invention with a surface mounting area 17 with an aperture 18 sized to receive a screw and three apertures 19 each sized to receive a nail or a pin. It will be noted that a range and/or plurality of fasteners and/or adhesives can be used to fasten the hanging apparatus 1 to a surface. Advantageously, different fasteners and/or adhesives will change the aesthetic appearance and/or the hanging strength of the hanging apparatus 1.

The hanging apparatus 1 has an arrangement 1 1 for spacing the pivotal bar 8 a distance apart from the surface. The spacing arrangement 1 1 has pair of mutually opposing flanges 12 projecting outwardly from, and perpendicular to, the plane of the surface mounting area 17. The pivotal bar 8 extends between the flanges 12.

The hanging apparatus 1 further has an apparatus 13 for preventing the securing and locating apparatus 3 and the surface mounting apparatus 2 from separating or coming apart or detaching. The separation preventing apparatus 13 is disposed on the securing and locating apparatus 3 at the end of the secondary hook 9. The separation preventing apparatus 13 has a protrusion 14 located at the end of the secondary hook 9. The protrusion 14 reduces the size of the opening 10 for receiving the pivotal bar 8 in at least one location. Advantageously, the separation preventing apparatus 13 prevents the surface mounting apparatus 2 and the securing and locating apparatus 3 from easily separating or coming apart or detaching.

The movement restrictor arrangement 7 has a mechanical brake located on the pivotal bar 8 and the secondary hook 9. The pivotal bar 8 has substantially flat surfaces 15. The interior surfaces of the secondary hook 9 have substantially flat surfaces 16. The substantially flat surfaces 15 of the pivotal bar 8 abut the substantially flat surfaces 16 of the secondary hook 9. When in the first position or the second position the substantially flat surfaces 15 of the pivotal bar 8 are abutting and are parallel to the substantially flat surfaces

16 of the secondary hook 9. Movement of the securing and locating apparatus 3 relative to the surface mounting apparatus 2 is restricted when the substantially flat surfaces 15 of the pivotal bar 8 are abutting and are parallel to the substantially flat surfaces 16 of the secondary hook 9.

The maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus 1 shown in Figures 37 to 50 when the pivotal bar 8 is located below the surface mounting area 17 is between 7.5 kilograms and 12.5 kilograms. The maximum hanging strength of the hanging apparatus 1 shown in Figures 1 to 36 when the pivotal bar 8 is located above the surface mounting area

17 is between 5 kilograms and 10 kilograms. Advantageously, the user can detach the securing and locating apparatus 3 from the surface mounting apparatus 2 and alter between these embodiments to select the desired location of the moveable attachment arrangement 6 relative to the surface mounting apparatus 2.

In relation to the detailed description of the different embodiments of the invention, it will be understood that one or more technical features of one embodiment can be used in combination with one or more technical features of any other embodiment where the transferred use of the one or more technical features would be immediately apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art to carry out a similar function in a similar way on the other embodiment.

In the preceding discussion of the invention, unless stated to the contrary, the disclosure of alternative values for the upper or lower limit of the permitted range of a parameter, coupled with an indication that one of the said values is more highly preferred than the other, is to be construed as an implied statement that each intermediate value of said parameter, lying between the more preferred and the less preferred of said alternatives, is itself preferred to said less preferred value and also to each value lying between said less preferred value and said intermediate value.

The features disclosed in the foregoing description or the following drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing a disclosed function, or a method or a process of attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may separately, or in any combination of such features be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof as defined in the appended claims.
