The present invention provides a highly efficient in-plane-switching-type liquid crystal display element endowed with alignment controllability and having excellent ghosting characteristics. The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a substrate having a liquid crystal alignment film, the method having: [I] a step for applying, on a substrate having a conductive film for in-plane switching, a polymer composition containing (A) a photosensitive side-chain polymer exhibiting liquid crystal properties in a predetermined temperature range, (B) di-isobutyl carbinol, and (C) an organic solvent and forming a coating film; [II] a step for irradiating the coating film obtained in [I] with polarized ultraviolet rays; and [III] a step for heating the coating film obtained in [II]; whereby is obtained a liquid crystal alignment film for an in-plane-switching-type liquid crystal display element endowed with alignment controllability.

Cette invention concerne un élément d'affichage à cristaux liquides de type à commutation dans le plan très efficace doté de fonctions d'alignement et présentant d'excellentes caractéristiques en termes d'images fantômes. Le procédé de fabrication d'un substrat portant un film d'alignement de cristaux liquides selon l'invention comprend : [I] une étape d'application, sur un substrat portant un film conducteur pour la commutation dans le plan, d'une composition polymère contenant (A) un polymère à chaîne latérale photosensible manifestant des propriétés de cristaux liquides dans une plage de températures prédéfinie, (B) un di-isobutyl carbinol, et (C) un solvant organique, et de formation d'un film de revêtement; [II] une étape d'exposition du film de revêtement obtenu en [I] à des rayons ultraviolets polarisés; et [III] une étape de chauffage du film de revêtement obtenu en [II]; pour obtenir ainsi un film d'alignement de cristaux liquides de type à commutation dans le plan doté de fonctions d'alignement.
