A rotary engine having a circular column-like flywheel rotor (4) rotating in a rotor housing (1) where a circular hollow cylindrical space is formed, a piston head (34) provided at the flywheel rotor (4) so as to be able to slide on and to be released from the sliding contact with the inner peripheral wall of the rotor housing (1), a suction valve (10) and an airtight valve (21) constructed so that then can partition a combustion chamber and can release the partition, an ignition plug (16), and an exhaust valve (28) provided so that it can allow the combustion chamber and the outside to communicate with each other and can interrupt the communication. The elements above are moved in association with rotational movement of the piston head (34) to perform suction, compression, combustion and expansion (explosion), and exhaust, and thereby rotational output is obtained by an output shaft (6) where the flywheel rotor (4) is supported.
