A backlight unit comprising a fluorescent lamp for illuminating a liquid crystal panel, a reflection unit for outputting a light from the fluorescent lamp in a specific direction, and a diffusion unit for diffusing light from the fluorescent lamp and the reflection unit, wherein a horizontal- or vertical-direction reflectance or transmittance is controlled by imparting to the reflection unit or diffusion unit a dot pattern gradually increasing in density from the central portion toward the peripheral portion thereof, or a transmittance is controlled by imparting to the fluorescent tube surface of the fluorescent lamp a dot pattern gradually increasing in density from the longitudinal central portion toward the opposite ends thereof. Accordingly, brightness gradients are formed in horizontal and vertical directions so that the brightness of the liquid crystal panel is relatively higher at the central portion than at the peripheral portion thereof.

L'invention concerne une unité de rétroéclairage comprenant une lampe fluorescente destinée à éclairer un panneau à cristaux liquides, une unité de réflexion servant à produire en sortie une lumière en provenance de la lampe fluorescente dans un sens spécifique, ainsi qu'une unité de diffusion servant à diffuser une lumière en provenance de la lampe fluorescente et de l'unité de réflexion. Une réflectance ou une transmittance dans le sens horizontal ou vertical est régulée par application d'un réseau de points sur l'unité de réflexion ou l'unité de diffusion, la densité de ce réseau augmentant progressivement depuis la partie centrale jusqu'à la partie périphérique de l'unité en question. La transmittance peut également être régulée par application d'un réseau de points sur la surface du tube fluorescent de la lampe fluorescente, la densité de ce réseau augmentant progressivement depuis la partie centrale longitudinale jusqu'aux extrémités opposées du tube. Par conséquent, des gradients de luminosité sont formés dans les sens horizontal et vertical de sorte que la luminosité du panneau à cristaux liquides soit relativement supérieure au niveau de sa partie centrale par rapport à sa partie périphérique.
