The present invention relates to a method for correcting a typographical error, in which a user inputs a character string to be corrected and a character string determined as having a high correlation is substituted with the character string to be corrected and inputted by calculating a correlation between the character string to be corrected and the character strings previously inputted. The characteristic feature of the present invention lies in the correlation determining step. In the correlation determining step of the present invention, a plurality of typographical error corrections are defined, a typographical error correction score is assigned to each of the plurality of typographical error corrections, and the total score is calculated in a manner of adding up typographical error correction scores given to each of the typographical error corrections required to correct a previously inputted character string to a character string to be corrected. If the number of cases of typographical error corrections which can be selected for the correction is two or more, the score for the case having the lowest total score is used in determining the correlation. The correlation is determined by comparing a predetermined threshold value with the total score calculated in such a manner.
