PURPOSE: A cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery is provided to improve high-rate discharge characteristics, lifespan characteristics and thermal safety at the same time.

CONSTITUTION: A cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises an inner bulk portion and an outer bulk portion surrounding the inner bulk portion, and has a continuous concentration gradient in the composition of metals from the interface where the outer bulk portion is in contact with the inner bulk portion to the surface of the active material. At least one of the inner bulk portion and the outer bulk portion has a layered crystal structure.

본 발명의 양극 활물질은 내부 벌크부와 상기 내부 벌크부를 둘러싸는 외부 벌크부를 포함하고, 상기 외부 벌크부와 내부 벌크부와의 접촉하는 경계면에서 활물질 표면으로 금속 조성이 연속적인 농도 구배로 존재한다. 본 발명에 따른 양극 활물질은 금속성분들이 위치에 따라 연속적인 농도분포를 가지며, 수명, 용량과 같은 전기화학적 특성과 열적 안정성이 우수하다.
