4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the second toothed rotary gear (16) comprises a toothed central hub erf the first rotary gear (16).

5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein the second rotary gear <16) interengages with the teeth of the inner ring
via a toothed drive belt (I B), ahd the toothed drive belt (18) emends around the toothed outer surface of the inner ring (11) and around the toothed central hub (18).

6, Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein the gearing arrangement includes a tensioner (ig) positioned between the outer and inner rinds (4,11) to tension the toothed drive belt (18).

Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, including an upper surface (26) supported by side walls (25) and covering tod drive mechanism (7), the upper surface (26) haying respective annular slots (27^28) formed therein whitih are coincident with the outer and inner rihgs (4,11), the first and second supports (3, Id) extending upwardly through the respective slots (27,28) so that the x-ray generator (1) and x-ray detector (2) mounted: on the supports (3» 10) are positioned above toe upper surface (26).

12, Apparatus as Claimed in claim 1 t,: wherein brushes (27a, 28a) are attached to each of the: edges of each of the slots (27,28) to inhibit dirt apd solid materials felling through the slots (27,28) and interfering with toe outer and inner rings (4,1:1).

Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first and second supports (3,10) are provided with means for raising and lowering the xnrpy generator (1 ) and k4ay detector (2) mounted on tile supports (3,10) so as to enable objects to be scanned at different heights above floor level.

14. Apparatus as claimed ip any preceding claim, including control means (40) to enable the drive mechanism (?) to be controlled by an operator.

15 Apparatus as claimed in claim 14, wherein the control means (40) is also arranged to receive, store and process data from the *-ray detector (2) in such a way as to produce one or more images.

16. Apparatus as claim in daim 14 or 15, including a Wield (41) for protecting the operator from x-ray radiation emitted by the xnay generator (1),

17. Apparatus as Claimed in any preceding claim, Wherein the object to be scanned is the limb of an animal and the apparatus includes means (38) for supporting the head of the animal.

16. Apparatus as claimed in claims 16 and; 17, wherein the control means (40), the shield (41) and the head supporting means (38) are provided In a Single control station (30) used by the operator.
