Claims

1. An electricity supply assembly for a premises, said assembly including at least one power supply connected to provide a DC electricity supply to an electricity supply substrate, said substrate positioned with respect to a surface of the premises to cover a predefined area of said surface, said substrate including first and second, spaced, conductive layers to which the said power supply is connected and wherein at least one connector is provided to be selectively positioned with respect to said substrate and to pass into the substrate to achieve electrical contact with said conductive layers in order to allow the DC electricity supply to be provided to the connector at said selected location.

2. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is substantially planer and the said conductive layers are stacked one above the other in a spaced apart relationship.

3. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the said connector is selectively positioned at a plurality of locations on said substrate so as to form an electrical supply connection point to supply said electrical DC power to one or more electrical items connected with the said connector.

4. An assembly according to claim 3 wherein the electrical connection to the electrical item is achieved via an integral connection.

5. An assembly according to claim 3 wherein the connector is provided with a socket or plug to which the electrical item can be selectively connected.

6. An assembly according to claim 5 wherein the connector socket or plug is configured to match that which is required at that premises and/or at a particular geographical location at which the network is provided.

7. An assembly according to claim 6 wherein the connector includes a number of different socket and/ or plug configurations.

8. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the DC power supply which is supplied to the conductive layers of the substrate is 24 volts or less.

9. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is provided as part of a flooring system of the premises.

10. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is non-rigid and can be rolled or folded for transport to the premises and unrolled or unfolded to cover the said predetermined area.

11. An assembly according to claim 9 wherein the substrate is provided as part of a floor covering in the form of a carpet or vinyl, or as an underlay, in which the substrate is located between the base of the floor and the floor covering which forms the external surface of the flooring system.

12. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the conductive layers of the substrate are separated by an insulating material.

13. An assembly according to claim 12 wherein further layers of insulating material are provided above the first conductive layer and/or below the second conductive layer.

14. An assembly according to claim 12 wherein the substrate comprises five layers, including the first and second conductive layers and at least one layer of insulating material.

15. An assembly according to any of claims 12-14 wherein the insulating layers and/ or further layers provide protection for the insulating layers.

16. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein at least one of the conductive layers has a degree of stretch which allows the movement of the conductive layers during forming of the substrate, subsequent installation and/ or use of the substrate to be absorbed whilst maintaining the conductive nature of the layers and providing the DC power supply to one or more connectors located therewith.

17. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein at least one of the conductive layers are formed as a matrix of conductive material to provide flexibility thereto.

18. An assembly according to the claim 17 wherein the matrix is formed by forming slots in the conductive sheet material and/or the sheet material is wrinkled and/ or corrugated.

19. An assembly according to claim 17 wherein the conductive layer matrix is formed by a braid or a lattice of conductive members.

20. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein the conductive layers have a thickness which is less than the thickness of the insulating layer positioned intermediate with the same.

21. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein the substrate is provided in a single heterogeneous format.

22. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein the conductive layers are provided as unitary layers across the substrate.

23. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the respective conductive layers are joined together at their edges to form larger area conductive layers.

24. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is formed in lengths or strips or parts which are joined together to form a larger substrate.

25. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein a number of substrates are provided side-by-side to provide a predetermined area with each of the substrates provided with separate DC power connections.

26. An assembly according to claim 25 wherein the DC power supply to each of the substrates differ so as to allow specific voltage levels to be provided to particular areas and/ or for use by specific types of electrical items which require different voltage levels.

27. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein the connector includes a first conductor located so as to make electrical connection with the first conductive layer of the substrate only and a second conductor provided to make electrical contact with a second

conductive layer of the substrate only and thereby complete the electrical connection of the connector to the DC power supply.

28. An assembly according to claim 27 wherein the connector includes securing means which allows the connector to be secured to one, or both of the base of the floor and/ or a floor covering which includes or is placed over the substrate.

An assembly according to claim 28 wherein the securing means provide mechanical engagement of the connector with the fabric of the building and/or the overlying floor covering to ensure that the connector is maintained in the user selected location and an electrical connection with the conductive layers of the substrate during subsequent use.

30. An assembly according to claim 29 wherein the securing means of the connector are releasable.

31. An assembly according to any of claims 27-30 wherein the conductive portions of the connector are introduced so as to pass into contact with respective conductor layers of the substrate so that, when in position, a first conductor of the connector locates with the first conductive layer of the substrate and the second conductor of the connector locates with the second conductive layer of the substrate.

32. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims where a plurality of connectors can be selectively positioned at different locations across the predetermined area of the substrate.

33. An assembly according to any of the preceding claims wherein to increase the electrical power capacity, further DC power connectors can be attached to the conductive layers of the substrate so as to provide additional DC power to the substrate.

34. A connector for selective positioning with respect to a substrate which carries an electricity supply along two spaced apart conductive layers wherein said connector is provided to allow electricity to be supplied from the substrate to a connected item and includes first and second portions provided spaced apart and formed so as to pass at least partially into the substrate so that the first portion is in electrical contact with a first of said conductive layers and the second portion is in electrical contact with the second of the said conductive layers to make an electrical connection to the said electricity supply.

35. A connector according to claim 35 wherein the connector includes at least one plug or socket to allow the said item to be connected thereto and the said plug or socket is accessible externally of the substrate when the connector is in position.

36. A connector according to claim 35 wherein the connector includes mechanical engagement means to allow the connector to be retained in position with respect to the substrate and/or a base, such as a floor or wall, on which the substrate is provided.

37. A substrate for use as part of an electricity supply assembly for a premises, said substrate including means to allow at least one electrical power supply to be connected to first and second conductive layers provided as part of the substrate, wherein said conductive layers are spaced apart by at least one layer of insulating and/ or protective material and a further layer of material forms the external face of the substrate and said layers are provided in a stacked manner and receive at least partially therethrough a connector which is selectively positionable with respect to the substrate and movable into the same to make an electrical connection with said conductive layers.

38. A substrate according to claim 37 wherein one or more further layers are provided in the substrate to provide further resistance to potential damage of the substrate.

39. A substrate according to claims 37 or 38 wherein one or more of the layers and/or intermediate the layers of the substrate is used to allow a further function to be provided.

40. A substrate according to claim 39 wherein the further function is the provision of data carried by one or more of the said layers or connection cables located in the said one or more layers or between said layers to allow the data to be accessible via the location of a connector therewith.

A substrate according to any of claims 37-40 wherein the substrate is formed of one part or a number of portions which are provided with separate electrical supply connections thereto or the conductive layers of adjacent portions are electrically connected so as to allow the same to act as a unitary substrate provided with electricity from the same common electricity supply connections.

42. A substrate according to any of claims 37-41 wherein in use the substrate is provided to be laid substantially flat.
