CLAIMS

1 . A polypeptide with glucose isomerase activity comprising an amino acid

sequence that is at least 90% identical to the amino acid sequence according to SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 2, wherein the polypeptide comprises a Glycine, Serine, Alanine or Cysteine residue at a position corresponding to position 104 in SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 2.

2. Polypeptide according to claim 1 comprising a Glycine residue at a position

corresponding to position 104 in SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 2.

3. Polypeptide according to claim 1 or 2 comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the amino acid according to SEQ ID NO: 1 , such as at least 91 %, 92%, 93%, 94%, 95%, 96%, 97%, 98%, or 99%.

4. Polypeptide according to any one of claims 1 - 3 wherein the polypeptide is an isolated polypeptide.

5. Composition comprising a polypeptide according to any one of claims 1 - 4.

6. Nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide according to any one of claims 1 - 4.

7. Vector comprising a nucleic acid according to claim 6.

8. Composition comprising a nucleic acid according to claim 6 or a vector according to claim 7.

9. Recombinant host cell comprising a nucleic acid according to claim 6, a vector according to claim 7 or a composition according to claim 8.

10. Recombinant host cell according to claim 9 selected from the group consisting of Escherichia coli, Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Pseudomonas, Pichia pastoris, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yarrowia lipolytica, filamentous fungi, yeast and insect cells.

1 1 . Method for producing a polypeptide according to any one of claims 1 - 4,

comprising the steps of:

a. culturing a recombinant host cell according to claim 9 or 10 under

conditions suitable for the production of the polypeptide, and

b. recovering the polypeptide obtained, and

c. optionally purifying said polypeptide.

12. Use of a polypeptide according to any one of claims 1 - 4 or a composition

according to claim 5 for the conversion of glucose to fructose, wherein the glucose is derived from lignocellulosic biomass.

13. Use according to claim 12 wherein the biomass contains xylan or glucurono- xylan.

14. Use according to claim 12 or 13 wherein the lignocellulose biomass is wood, such as hardwood.

15. Method for increasing the glucose isomerase activity of a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the amino acid according to SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 2, the method comprising the step of replacing the amino acid at a position corresponding to position 104 in SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 2 with a Glycine, Serine, Alanine or Cysteine residue.
