A topical composition comprising erythrulose and a caprylate, characterized in that weight-ratio (w/w) of the caprylate to erythrulose is >1 .

The topical composition according to claim 1 , characterized in that the caprylate is glyceryl caprylate.

The topical composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the amount of erythrulose is selected in the range of about 0.01 to 3 wt.-% and most preferably in the range of 0.025 to 2 wt.-%, such as in an amount of 0.04 to 1 wt.-% and particularly advantageous in an amount of 0.04 to 0.75 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

The topical composition according to anyone of claims 1 to 3, wherein the amount of the caprylate is selected in the range of 0.1 to 2 wt.-%, preferably in the range of 0.2 to 1 .5 wt.-%, most preferably in the range of 0.3 to 1 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the weight ratio is selected in the range of 1.25 to 3, preferably in the range of 1.5 to 2.5.

The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the composition is a cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition.

The topical composition according to claim 6, wherein the composition is a shampoo preparation, a hair conditioner, an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion or a gel.

The topical composition according to any one of claim 1 or 7, wherein the composition furthermore comprises water and at least one agent selected from the group consisting of surfactants, emulsifiers, thickeners and oils.

A method of treating the skin and/ or the scalp, said method comprising the steps of contacting the skin and/ or scalp with a topical composition according to anyone of claim 1 to 8.

10. A method according to claim 9 for maintaining a healthy skin homeostasis and/ or for maintaining skin microbiome balance.

1 1 . A mixture of erythrulose and a caprylate, preferably glyceryl caprylate, preferably in a weight ratio (w/w) of the caprylate to erythrulose of > 1 , for the treatment of acne.

12. The topical composition according to any one of claims 1 to 8 for use in the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of fungal and/ or bacterial cell induced diseases and/ or disorders, preferably for the treatment, prevention and/or prophylaxis of acne.

13. A method of method of killing and/ or inhibiting growth of microbial cells, in particular fungal and/ or bacterial cells, preferably P. acnes and C. albicans, said method comprising contacting said cells with a mixture of erythrulose and a caprylate, preferably glyceryl caprylate.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the microbial cells are P. acnes, S. epidermis, C. xerosis, A. brasiliensis, C. albicans, P. aeruginosa, E. coli. M. furfur and/ or S. aureus, preferably P. acnes and C. albicans.

15. Use of a mixture of erythrulose and a caprylate, preferably glyceryl caprylate as antimicrobial agent against P. acnes, S. epidermis, C. xerosis, A. brasiliensis, C. albicans, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, M. furfur and/ or S. aureus, preferably P. acnes and C. albicans.
