WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a cartridge body comprising a blunt nose at said distal end;

a plurality of staple cavities defined within said cartridge body, wherein said plurality of staple cavities extends longitudinally from said proximal end to said distal end;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said plurality of staple cavities; a driver configured to support at least one of said plurality of staples; and a sled movable toward said distal end during a firing stroke, wherein said sled comprises:

a first ramp; and

a second ramp, wherein said first ramp is laterally offset from said second ramp, wherein said first ramp and said second ramp are configured to lift said driver, and wherein said blunt nose of said cartridge body comprises a first recess formed within said distal end configured to receive said first ramp of said sled after the completion of said firing stroke and a second recess formed within said distal end configured to receive said second ramp of said sled after said firing stroke has been completed.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 1 , wherein said first ramp and said second ramp are exposed at said distal end upon the completion of said firing stroke.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 1 , wherein said driver comprises a first driver portion configured to support a first staple, a second driver portion configured to support a second staple, and a third driver portion configured to support a third staple.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 3, wherein said driver further comprises a central base member which connects said first driver portion, said second driver portion, and said third driver portion.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 4, wherein said first driver portion comprises a first forward support column comprising a proximal end and said second driver portion comprises a second forward support column comprising a distal end, wherein said central base member extends longitudinally between said proximal end of the said first forward support column and said distal end of said second forward support column.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 4, wherein said central base member comprises a rearwardly-angled wall configured to be engaged by said sled.

7. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 1 , wherein said sled is configured to drive said driver toward an anvil positioned opposite said staple cartridge assembly.

8. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a cartridge body comprising a shortened nose at said distal end;

a row of staples removably stored in said cartridge body, wherein said row of staples extends longitudinally from said proximal end to said distal end, and wherein said row of staples comprises a distal-most staple and a proximal-most staple;

drivers, wherein each said driver is configured to support at least one of said staples; and

a sled movable toward said distal end, wherein said sled comprises:

a ramp configured to lift said drivers and said staples toward an anvil positioned opposite said staple cartridge assembly during a firing stroke; and

a base, wherein a length of said shortened nose extends from said distal-most staple to said distal end, and wherein said length of said shortened nose is shorter than said base of said sled.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 8, further comprising said anvil, wherein said anvil comprises a protective tip on said distal end.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 8, further comprising said anvil, wherein said distal end of said shortened nose extends beyond said distal end of said anvil.

1 1. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 8, wherein said ramp of said sled is exposed at said distal end upon the completion of said firing stroke.

12. An end effector for a surgical stapling instrument, said end effector comprising: a staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a cartridge body comprising a shortened nose at said distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a driver configured to support at least one of said staples; and a sled movable toward said distal end, wherein said sled comprises:

a ramp configured to lift said driver and at least one said staple; and

a base, wherein said shortened nose of said cartridge body is shorter than said base of said sled; and

an anvil, comprising:

a staple forming surface comprising a plurality of staple forming pockets; and

a blunt distal nose extending downward toward said staple cartridge assembly.

13. The end effector of Claim 12, wherein said blunt distal nose is removably attached to said anvil.

14. The end effector of Claim 12, wherein said anvil further comprises a frame comprising an attachment feature configured to facilitate the attachment of said blunt distal nose to said frame.

15. The end effector of Claim 12, wherein said anvil comprises a distal end, and wherein said distal end of said staple cartridge assembly extends beyond said distal end of said anvil.

16. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a slot configured to receive a cutting member;

a first row of staples removably stored in said cartridge body, wherein said first row of staples extends between said proximal end and said distal end alongside a first side of said slot;

a second row of staples removably stored in said cartridge body, wherein said second row of staples extends between said proximal end and said distal end alongside said first row of staples on said first side of said slot;

a third row of staples removably stored in said cartridge body, wherein said third row of staples extends between said proximal end and said distal end alongside said second row of staples on said first side of said slot; and

a driver configured to support a first staple from said first row of staples, a second staple from said second row of staples, and a third staple from said third row of staples, wherein said second staple is closer to said proximal end than said first staple and said third staple.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 16, wherein said first staple, said second staple, and said third staple form a reverse arrow configuration.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 16, further comprising a sled configured to lift said driver toward an anvil positioned opposite said staple cartridge assembly.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 18, further comprising an anvil, wherein said anvil comprises a distal end.

20. The staple cartridge assembly of Claim 19, wherein said distal end of said staple cartridge extends distally with respect to said distal end of said anvil.

21. A staple cartridge system, comprising:

an end effector configurable in an undamped configuration and a clamped configuration, comprising:

an anvil jaw; and

a cartridge jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge, wherein said cartridge jaw comprises a cartridge support datum;

a first staple cartridge, comprising:

a first deck configured to support the tissue of a patient;

first staple cavities defined in said first deck;

first staples removably stored in said first staple cavities;

a first proximal end, wherein said first proximal end is aligned with a datum of said cartridge jaw when said first staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw; and

a first distal end, wherein a first cartridge length is defined between said first proximal end and said first distal end; and

a second staple cartridge, comprising:

a second deck configured to support the tissue of a patient; second staple cavities defined in said second deck;

second staples removably stored in said second staple cavities;

a second proximal end, wherein said second proximal end is aligned with said datum of said cartridge jaw when said second staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw; and

a second distal end, wherein a second cartridge length is defined between said second proximal end and said second distal end,

wherein said anvil is supported by a first location on said first staple cartridge when said end effector is in said clamped configuration and said first staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw, wherein said anvil is supported by a second location on said second staple cartridge when said end effector is in said clamped configuration and said second staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw, wherein said first location is a first orthogonal distance away from said cartridge support datum when said first staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw and said second location is a second orthogonal distance away from said cartridge support datum when said second staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw, wherein said first orthogonal distance is different than said second orthogonal distance, and wherein said anvil jaw deflects differently in response to whether said first staple cartridge or said second staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw.

22. The staple cartridge system of Claim 21 , wherein said second cartridge length is different than said first cartridge length.

23. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said second cartridge length is shorter than said first cartridge length.

24. The staple cartridge system of Claim 23, wherein said second orthogonal distance is shorter than said first orthogonal distance.

25. The staple cartridge system of Claim 23, wherein said second orthogonal distance is taller than said first orthogonal distance.

26. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said second cartridge length is longer than said first cartridge length.

27. The staple cartridge system of Claim 26, wherein said second orthogonal distance is shorter than said first orthogonal distance.

28. The staple cartridge system of Claim 27, wherein said second orthogonal distance is taller than said first orthogonal distance.

29. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said second location is closer to said second distal end than said first location to said first distal end.

30. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said second location is positioned further from said second distal end than said first location from said first distal end.

31. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said anvil jaw comprises a distal anvil tip, wherein said first cartridge length is set such that said distal anvil tip extends beyond said first distal end, and wherein said second cartridge length is set such that said distal anvil tip does not extend beyond said second distal end.

32. The staple cartridge system of Claim 31 , wherein said anvil jaw experiences a first deflection when said end effector is in said clamped configuration and said first staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw, wherein said anvil jaw experiences a second deflection when said end effector is in said clamped configuration and said second staple cartridge is positioned in said cartridge jaw, and wherein said second deflection is larger than said first deflection.

33. The staple cartridge system of Claim 32, wherein each said first staple comprises an unformed height within a first unformed height range, wherein each said second staple comprises an unformed height within a second unformed height range, and

wherein said second unformed height range comprises heights which are taller than the heights in said first unformed height range.

34. The staple cartridge system of Claim 32, wherein each said first staple comprises an unformed height within a first unformed height range, wherein each said second staple comprises an unformed height within a second unformed height range, and wherein said second unformed height range comprises heights which are shorter than the heights in said first unformed height range.

35. The staple cartridge system of Claim 32, wherein each said first staple comprises an unformed height within a first unformed height range, wherein each said second staple comprises an unformed height within a second unformed height range, and wherein said second unformed height range is different than said first unformed height range but partially overlaps with said first unformed height range.

36. The staple cartridge system of Claim 22, wherein said anvil jaw comprises a distal anvil tip, wherein said first cartridge length is set such that said distal anvil tip extends beyond said first distal end, and wherein said second cartridge length is set such that said distal anvil tip is shorter than said second distal end.

37. The staple cartridge system of Claim 21 , wherein said anvil jaw is rotatable relative to said cartridge jaw.

38. The staple cartridge system of Claim 21 , wherein said cartridge jaw is rotatable relative to said anvil jaw.

39. The staple cartridge system of Claim 21 , wherein said first distal end comprises a first cartridge nose and said second distal end comprises a second cartridge nose, and wherein said second cartridge nose is blunter than said first cartridge nose.

40. The staple cartridge system of Claim 21 , wherein said first distal end comprises a first cartridge nose and said second distal end comprises a second cartridge nose, and wherein said second cartridge nose is shorter than said first cartridge nose.
