WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft assembly defining a shaft axis; and

a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft assembly for selective articulation relative thereto about an articulation axis that is transverse to said shaft axis, said surgical end effector comprising:

a first end effector jaw coupled to an articulation joint coupled to said elongate shaft assembly;

a second end effector jaw coupled to said first end effector jaw for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about a jaw pivot axis that is transverse to said shaft axis; and

an axially movable firing member comprising at least one jaw engagement feature thereon configured to apply a closure motion to said second end effector jaw as said axially movable firing member is moved from a starting position to an end position within said first end effector jaw, said at least one jaw engagement feature being configured such that a portion thereof is positioned between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position.

2. The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein said portion of said at least one jaw engagement feature is positioned between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position and said second end effector jaw is in a fully opened position.

3. The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein at least thirty five percent of each said jaw engagement feature is located between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position.

4. The surgical instrument of Claim 2, wherein at least thirty-five percent of each said jaw engagement feature is between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position and said end effector second jaw is in a fully opened position.

5. The surgical instrument of Claim 1, further comprising an axially movable closure member independently movable relative to said axially movable firing member and configured to selectively apply additional closure motions to said second end effector jaw.

6. The surgical instrument of Claim 5, wherein said axially movable closure member comprises a closure member cam surface configured for camming contact with a jaw cam surface on said second end effector jaw.

7. The surgical instrument of Claim 1 , wherein said axially movable firing member comprises a tissue cutting surface.

8. The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein said first end effector jaw comprises an elongate channel configured to operably support a surgical fastener cartridge therein and wherein said second end effector jaw comprises an anvil.

9. The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein said jaw pivot axis is fixed.

10. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft assembly defining a shaft axis; and

a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft assembly for selective articulation relative thereto about an articulation axis that is transverse to said shaft axis, said surgical end effector comprising:

an elongate channel coupled to said elongate shaft assembly and being configured to operably support a surgical fastener cartridge therein;

an anvil coupled to said elongate channel for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about a fixed jaw pivot axis that is transverse to said shaft axis; and

an axially movable firing member comprising at least one anvil engagement feature thereon configured to apply a closure motion to said anvil as said axially movable firing member is moved from a starting position to an end position within said elongate channel, said at least one anvil engagement feature being configured such that a portion

thereof is positioned between said fixed jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position.

11. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, wherein said portion of said at least one anvil engagement feature is positioned between said fixed jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position and said anvil is in a fully opened position.

12. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, wherein at least thirty-five percent of each said anvil engagement feature is located between said fixed jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position.

13. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, wherein at least thirty-five percent of each said anvil engagement feature is located between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position and said anvil is in a fully opened position.

14. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, further comprising an axially movable closure member independently movable relative to said axially movable firing member and configured to selectively apply additional closure motions to said anvil.

15. The surgical instrument of Claim 14, wherein said axially movable closure member comprises a closure member cam surface configured for camming contact with an anvil cam surface on said anvil.

16. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, wherein said firing member comprises a tissue cutting surface.

17. The surgical instrument of Claim 10, wherein said firing member comprises a firing member body comprising a tissue cutting surface thereon and wherein said at least one anvil engagement feature comprises:

a first anvil engagement tab protruding from a first lateral side of a top portion of said firing member body; and

a second anvil engagement tab protruding from a second lateral side of said top portion of said firing member body.

18. The surgical instrument of Claim 17, wherein said firing member body extends through a slot in an anvil mounting portion of said anvil when said firing member is in said starting position.

19. A surgical system, comprising:

a housing operably supporting a closure system and a firing system therein, said closure system and said firing system being independently actuatable relative to each other; and

an interchangeable surgical tool assembly comprising:

an elongate shaft assembly operably and removably couplable to said housing such that a proximal closure portion thereof is configured to receive axial closure motions from said closure system and a proximal firing member thereof is configured to receive firing motions from said firing system, said elongate shaft assembly defining a shaft axis; and

a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft assembly for selective articulation relative thereto about an articulation axis that is transverse to said shaft axis, said surgical end effector comprising:

an elongate channel coupled to said elongate shaft assembly and being configured to operably support a surgical fastener cartridge therein;

an anvil coupled to said elongate channel for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about a jaw pivot axis that is transverse to said shaft axis; and an axially movable firing member operably coupled to said proximal firing member and comprising at least one anvil engagement feature thereon configured to apply a closure motion to said anvil as said axially movable firing member is moved from a starting position to an end position within said elongate channel, said at least one anvil engagement feature being configured such that a portion

thereof is positioned between said jaw pivot axis and said articulation axis when said axially movable firing member is in said starting position.
