A structural module (1) comprising a structural frame having structural members forming:

floor plates (2),

wall plates (3),

vertical columns (4),

braces (7) extending at angles from the columns to the floor plates, and wall studs (60),

in which the columns and the braces are configured to transfer vertical loads without assistance from some or all of the studs.

A structural module as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least some of the columns (4) have a box-section configuration.

A structural module as claimed in claims 1 or 2, wherein the columns (4) and the braces (7) are joined by welding.

A structural module as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein there is a column (4) at each corner of the module.

A structural module as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein there is a column (54) at each side of a door ope.

A structural module as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a module-to- module tie (200) affixed to at least one column.

A structural module as claimed in claim 6, wherein at least one tie (200) is affixed to a top surface of a column, and the tie is configured to perform the function of a capping plate for interfacing with an upper module placed on the module.

8. A structural module as claimed in claim 7, wherein at least one tie comprises an under plate (235).

9. A structural module as claimed in either of claims 6 to 8, wherein the tie (200) is adapted to link columns of adjoining modules together in a horizontal plane, and to accommodate misalignment of the modules in the horizontal plane.

10. A structural module as claimed in claim 9, wherein the tie comprises a pair of opposed plates (210) each defining an enclosure accessed by a mouth (216), and a tie element (220, 230) configured to extend through said mouths and to engage said enclosures.

11. A structural module as claimed in claim 10, wherein the mouth (216, 217) has an opening to allow insertion of the tie element vertically.

12. A structural module as claimed in either of claims 10 or 11, wherein the tie element comprises a tie rod (230) with sockets (220) at each end, said sockets being configured to be inserted in the enclosures (215).

13. A structural module as claimed in claim 12, wherein the tie rod (230) is threadably engaged with a receiver (225) at each end, each said receiver being configured to be inserted into sockets which fit into the enclosures.

14. A structural module as claimed in claim 13, wherein the receivers (225) are of cylindrical shape and are each configured to fit in a socket with a cylindrical axis extending vertically.

15. A structural module as claimed in any of claims 10 to 14, wherein the plate mouths (216, 217) are tapered to define a widening mouth towards an entrance, to allow variation in angle of entry of the tie rod into the enclosure to accommodate misalignment of the plates in the horizontal plane in use.

16. A structural module as claimed in any of claims 10 to 15, wherein the tie element comprises a spacer (353) configured to be retained between the plates.

17. A structural module as claimed in claim 16, wherein the spacer has a bore through which a tie rod extends.

18. A structural module as claimed in either of claims 16 or 17, wherein the spacer (353) is configured to be fastened to at least one plate so that it may assist with withstanding tie shear forces.

19. A structural module as claimed in claim 18, wherein the spacer comprises at least one edge configured for welding to a plate.

20. A structural module as claimed in claim 19, wherein the spacer comprises at least one tapered surface (354) having an edge configured for welding to a plate.

21. A structural module as claimed in claim 20, wherein the spacer comprises a pair of tapered surfaces (354) in a symmetrical arrangement about the tie rod.

22. A structural module as claimed in any of claims 10 to 21, wherein at least one enclosure (502) is arc-shaped in plan with a convex side facing the mouth.

23. A structural module as claimed in claim 22, wherein the tie element comprises a pair of sockets (506) configured to be directly inserted into the enclosures, each socket having an arc-shaped portion in plan extending away from a neck portion (508) and being configured to fit into the enclosure (502).

24. A structural module as claimed in claim 23, wherein the tie element further comprises a tie rod (510) configured to threadably engage with a socket at each end.

25. A tie (200) for a structural module, the tie comprising components adapted to be affixed to adjoining structural modules for example tops of columns of modules, wherein the tie is adapted to link adjoining modules (1) together in a horizontal plane, and to accommodate misalignment of the modules in the horizontal plane, wherein the tie comprises a pair of opposed plates (210) each defining an enclosure (215) accessed by a mouth (216, 217), and a tie element configured to extend through the mouths and to engage said enclosures, and wherein the mouths each have an opening to allow insertion of the tie element (230) vertically.

26. A tie as claimed in claim 25, wherein the tie element comprises a tie rod (230) with a socket (220) at each end, said sockets being configured to be inserted in the enclosures (215).

27. A tie as claimed in claim 26, wherein the tie rod is threadably engaged with a receiver at each end, each said receiver being configured to be inserted into sockets which fit into the enclosures.

28. A tie as claimed in claim 27, wherein the receivers (225) are of cylindrical shape and are each configured to fit in a socket with a cylindrical axis extending vertically.

29. A tie as claimed in any of claims 25 to 28, wherein the plate mouths (216, 217) are tapered to define a widening mouth towards an entrance, to allow variation in angle of entry of the tie rod into the enclosure to accommodate misalignment of the plates in the horizontal plane in use.

30. A tie as claimed in any of claims 25 to 29, wherein the tie element comprises a spacer

(353) configured to be retained between the plates.

31. A tie as claimed in claim 30, wherein the spacer has a bore through which a tie rod extends.

32. A tie as claimed in either of claims 30 or 31, wherein the spacer is configured to be fastened to at least one plate so that it may assist with withstanding tie shear forces.

33. A tie as claimed in claim 32, wherein the spacer comprises at least one edge configured for welding to a plate.

34. A tie as claimed in claim 33, wherein the spacer comprises at least one tapered surface having an edge configured for welding to a plate.

35. A tie as claimed in claim 34, wherein the spacer comprises a pair of tapered surfaces

(354) in a symmetrical arrangement about the tie rod.

36. A tie as claimed in any of claims 25 to 35, wherein at least one enclosure (502) has an arc shape with a curve extending away from the mouth.

37. A tie as claimed in any of claims 25 to 36, wherein at least one socket (506) has an arc shaped portion in plan extending away from a neck portion (508) configured to fit into the enclosure (502) of the corresponding plate.

A tie as claimed in claims 36 or 37, wherein said arc-shaped enclosure (502) comprises a convex wall (505) facing the mouth, and the socket has a correspondingly- shape concave side (507) engaging said convex wall.
