CLAIMS:

1. A method in a wireless device (810), comprising:

receiving (1404) an uplink grant from a network node (815), the uplink grant scheduling one or more uplink transmissions by the wireless device;

selecting (1408) an ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions; and

determining (1412), based on the received uplink grant, an allowed placement of a transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask and a duration of the transient period to use for the one or more uplink transmissions.

2. The method of Claim 1, comprising performing the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions using the selected ON/OFF time mask.

3. The method of any of Claims 1-2, wherein determining the allowed placement and the duration of the transient period is based on one or more of:

one or more pre-defined rules;

a modulation to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions; a power level of one or more sTTIs;

a power level of one or more symbols;

a position of a reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions;

whether the one or more uplink transmissions share reference symbols; and a number of consecutively scheduled uplink transmission using sTTIs.

4. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with one or more of:

a reference symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions; and

a data symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

5. The method of any of Claims 1-4, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one uplink

transmission preceding or following a scheduled sounding reference signal (SRS) transmission; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask does not overlap with the scheduled SRS transmission.

6. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one data uplink transmission preceding or following a scheduled control channel transmission; and

the method comprises determining a position of at least one of:

a reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission; and a data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission.

7. The method of Claim 6, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission if the reference symbol is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

8. The method of Claim 6, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the scheduled control channel transmission if the data symbol of the at least data uplink transmission is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

9. The method of Claim 6, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both reference symbols are placed consecutively.

10. The method of Claim 6, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission are placed consecutively.

11. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions have separate reference symbol positions.

12. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a data symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions share reference symbol positions.

13. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of a first uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions and a data symbol of a second uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions.

14. The method of any of Claims 1-3, wherein selecting the ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions comprises selecting an ON/OFF time mask in which the transient period does not overlap with any symbols of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

15. The method of any of Claims 1-14, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions are scheduled using short transmission time intervals.

16. A method in a network node (815), comprising:

determining (1504) a position of a reference symbol in one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for a wireless device (810); and

sending (1508) an uplink grant to the wireless device for scheduling the one or more uplink transmissions, the uplink grant indicating the determined position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions.

17. The method of Claim 16, wherein determining the position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device is based on one or more of:

a position of a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) transmission relative to the one or more uplink transmissions;

a number of consecutively scheduled data uplink transmissions for the wireless device;

an uplink power in the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation rate of the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate of the one or more uplink transmissions; and

one or more characteristics of the reference symbol.

18. The method of any of Claims 16-17, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS that is below a threshold; and

determining the position of the reference symbol comprises selecting a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will at least partially overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

19. The method of any of Claims 16-17, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS scheme that is above a threshold; and

determining the position of the reference symbol comprises selecting a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will not overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

20. The method of any of Claims 16-17, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions comprises an SRS transmission; and

determining the position of the reference symbol comprises selecting a position of the reference symbol that will not be within a transmission time interval (TTI) used for transmitting the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

21. The method of Claim 20, wherein the selected position of the reference symbol is in another uplink transmission preceding the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

22. The method of any of Claims 16-17, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules consecutive uplink transmissions, the consecutive uplink transmissions comprising at least a first uplink transmission and a second uplink transmission that share the reference symbol; and

determining the position of the reference symbol is further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the first uplink transmission and the second uplink transmission.

23. The method of any of Claims 16-17, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules a plurality of uplink transmissions that do not share the reference symbol; and

determining the position of the reference symbol comprises selecting, for each of the plurality of uplink transmissions, a position of a reference symbol in each respective uplink transmission that at least partially overlaps with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform each respective uplink transmission.

24. The method of Claim 23, wherein determining the position of the reference symbol is further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the plurality of uplink transmissions.

25. The method of any of Claims 16-24, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device comprise one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device using short TTIs.

26. A wireless device (810), comprising:

a receiver (1610);

a transmitter (1610); and

processing circuitry (1620) coupled to the receiver and the transmitter, the processing circuitry configured to:

receive (1404), via the receiver, an uplink grant from a network node (815), the uplink grant scheduling one or more uplink transmissions by the wireless device; select (1408) an ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions; and

determine (1412), based on the received uplink grant, an allowed placement of a transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask and a duration of the transient period to use for the one or more uplink transmissions.

27. The wireless device of Claim 26, wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

perform, via the transmitter, the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions using the selected ON/OFF time mask.

28. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-27, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the allowed placement and the duration of the transient period based on one or more of:

one or more pre-defined rules;

a modulation to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions; a power level of one or more sTTIs;

a power level of one or more symbols;

a position of a reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions;

whether the one or more uplink transmissions share reference symbols; and a number of consecutively scheduled uplink transmission using sTTIs.

29. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with one or more of:

a reference symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions; and

a data symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

30. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-29, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one uplink transmission preceding or following a scheduled sounding reference signal (SRS) transmission; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask does not overlap with the scheduled SRS transmission.

31. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one data uplink transmission preceding or following a scheduled control channel transmission; and

the processing circuitry is configured to determine a position of at least one of:

a reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission; and a data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission.

32. The wireless device of Claim 31, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission if the reference symbol is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

33. The wireless device of Claim 31, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the scheduled control channel transmission if the data symbol of the at least data uplink transmission is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

34. The wireless device of Claim 31, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both reference symbols are placed consecutively.

35. The wireless device of Claim 31, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission are placed consecutively.

36. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions have separate reference symbol positions.

37. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a data symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions share reference symbol positions.

38. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of a first uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions and a data symbol of a second uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions.

39. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-28, wherein selecting the ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions comprises selecting an ON/OFF time mask in which the transient period does not overlap with any symbols of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

40. The wireless device of any of Claims 26-39, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions are scheduled using short transmission time intervals.

41. A network node (815), comprising:

a receiver (1710);

a transmitter (1710); and

processing circuitry (1720), the processing circuitry configured to:

determine (1504) a position of a reference symbol in one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for a wireless device (810); and

send (1508), via the transmitter, an uplink grant to the wireless device for scheduling the one or more uplink transmissions, the uplink grant indicating the determined position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions.

42. The network node of Claim 41, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device based on one or more of:

a position of a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) transmission relative to the one or more uplink transmissions;

a number of consecutively scheduled data uplink transmissions for the wireless device;

an uplink power in the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation rate of the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate of the one or more uplink transmissions; and

one or more characteristics of the reference symbol.

43. The network node of any of Claims 41-42, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS that is below a threshold; and

the processing circuitry is configured to select a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will at least partially overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

44. The network node of any of Claims 41-42, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS scheme that is above a threshold; and

the processing circuitry is configured to select a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will not overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

45. The network node of any of Claims 41-42, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions comprises an SRS transmission; and

the processing circuitry is configured to select a position of the reference symbol that will not be within a transmission time interval (TTI) used for transmitting the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

46. The network node of Claim 45, wherein the selected position of the reference symbol is in another uplink transmission preceding the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

47. The network node of any of Claims 41-42, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules consecutive uplink transmissions, the consecutive uplink transmissions comprising at least a first uplink transmission and a second uplink transmission that share the reference symbol; and

the processing circuitry is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the first uplink transmission and the second uplink transmission.

48. The network node of any of Claims 41-42, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules a plurality of uplink transmissions that do not share the reference symbol; and

the processing circuitry is configured to select, for each of the plurality of uplink transmissions, a position of a reference symbol in each respective uplink transmission that at least partially overlaps with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform each respective uplink transmission.

49. The network node of Claim 48, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the plurality of uplink transmissions.

50. The network node of any of Claims 41-49, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device comprise one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device using short TTIs.

51. A wireless device (810), comprising:

a receiving module (1930) configured to receive (1404), via the receiver, an uplink grant from a network node (815), the uplink grant scheduling one or more uplink transmissions by the wireless device; and

a determining module (1910) coupled to the receiving module, the determining module configured to:

select (1408) an ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions; and

determine (1412), based on the received uplink grant, an allowed placement of a transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask and a duration of the transient period to use for the one or more uplink transmissions.

52. The wireless device of Claim 51, comprising:

a communication module (1920) coupled to the determining module, the communication module configured to perform the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions using the selected ON/OFF time mask.

53. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-52, wherein the determining module is configured to determine the allowed placement and the duration of the transient period based on one or more of:

one or more pre-defined rules;

a modulation to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme to be used for the one or more uplink transmissions; a power level of one or more sTTIs;

a power level of one or more symbols;

a position of a reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions;

whether the one or more uplink transmissions share reference symbols; and a number of consecutively scheduled uplink transmission using sTTIs.

54. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with one or more of:

a reference symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions; and

a data symbol of at least one of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

55. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-54, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one uplink transmission preceding or following a scheduled sounding reference signal (SRS) transmission; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask does not overlap with the scheduled SRS transmission.

56. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise at least one data uplink transmission preceding or following a scheduled control channel transmission; and the determining module is further configured to determine a position of at least one of:

a reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission relative to the scheduled control channel transmission in time;

a reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission; and a data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission.

57. The wireless device of Claim 56, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission if the reference symbol is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

58. The wireless device of Claim 56, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the scheduled control channel transmission if the data symbol of the at least data uplink transmission is next to the scheduled control channel transmission in time.

59. The wireless device of Claim 56, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both reference symbols are placed consecutively.

60. The wireless device of Claim 56, wherein the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps both the data symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the data symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission if both the reference symbol of the at least one data uplink transmission and the reference symbol of the scheduled control channel transmission are placed consecutively.

61. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink

transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions have separate reference symbol positions.

62. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a data symbol of at least one of the two or more uplink transmissions if the two or more uplink transmissions share reference symbol positions.

63. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein:

the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions comprise two or more uplink transmissions; and

the transient period of the selected ON/OFF time mask overlaps with a reference symbol of a first uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions and a data symbol of a second uplink transmission of the two or more uplink transmissions.

64. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-53, wherein selecting the ON/OFF time mask to use for transmitting the one or more uplink transmissions comprises selecting an ON/OFF time mask in which the transient period does not overlap with any symbols of the scheduled one or more uplink transmissions.

65. The wireless device of any of Claims 51-64, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions are scheduled using short transmission time intervals.

66. A network node (815), comprising:

a determining module (2010) configured to determine (1504) a position of a reference symbol in one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for a wireless device (810); and a communication module (2020) coupled to the determining module, the communication module configured to send (1508) an uplink grant to the wireless device for scheduling the one or more uplink transmissions, the uplink grant

indicating the determined position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions.

67. The network node of Claim 66, wherein the determining module is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol in the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device based on one or more of:

a position of a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) transmission relative to the one or more uplink transmissions;

a number of consecutively scheduled data uplink transmissions for the wireless device;

an uplink power in the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) used for the one or more uplink transmissions;

a modulation rate of the one or more uplink transmissions;

a coding rate of the one or more uplink transmissions; and

one or more characteristics of the reference symbol.

68. The network node of any of Claims 66-67, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS that is below a threshold; and

the determining module is configured to select a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will at least partially overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

69. The network node of any of Claims 66-67, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions is preceded by an SRS transmission and scheduled with a MCS scheme that is above a threshold; and

the determining module is configured to select a position of the reference symbol in the at least one uplink transmission that will not overlap with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform the at least one uplink transmission.

70. The network node of any of Claims 66-67, wherein:

at least one of the one or more uplink transmissions comprises an SRS transmission; and

the determining module is configured to select a position of the reference symbol that will not be within a transmission time interval (TTI) used for transmitting the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

71. The network node of Claim 45, wherein the selected position of the reference symbol is in another uplink transmission preceding the at least one uplink transmission comprising the SRS transmission.

72. The network node of any of Claims 66-67, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules consecutive uplink transmissions, the consecutive uplink transmissions comprising at least a first uplink transmission and a second uplink transmission that share the reference symbol; and

the determining module is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the first uplink transmission and the second uplink transmission.

73. The network node of any of Claims 66-67, wherein:

the uplink grant to the wireless device schedules a plurality of uplink transmissions that do not share the reference symbol; and

the determining module is configured to select, for each of the plurality of uplink transmissions, a position of a reference symbol in each respective uplink transmission that at least partially overlaps with a transient period of an ON/OFF time mask that the wireless device will use to perform each respective uplink transmission.

74. The network node of Claim 48, wherein the determining module is configured to determine the position of the reference symbol further based on whether there is a change in transmit power by the wireless device between the plurality of uplink transmissions.

75. The network node of any of Claims 66-74, wherein the one or more uplink transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device comprise one or more uplink

transmissions to be scheduled for the wireless device using short TTIs.
