CLAIMS:

1. A method of adjusting a vortex of molten metal comprising: providing a vessel including an interior surface for containing molten metal and an opening for receiving solid metal at an upper end portion of said interior surface, an outlet passageway extending downwardly from said interior surface and a vortex control diverter that can be suspended within the molten metal above the outlet passage, and an inlet opening penetrating said interior surface; positioning said vortex diverter at a desired distance above said outlet passageway; moving the molten metal into said vessel inlet opening to form said vortex in said vessel, wherein said molten metal is moved into said vessel inlet opening by operating a pump; and depositing said solid metal in a region between said diverter and said interior surface.

2. A molten metal scrap submergence system comprising a furnace and a vortexing scrap submergence well, said vortexing scrap submergence well including a diverter suspended above the well and oriented for immersion in a bath of molten metal circulating within said well.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein said diverter is cylindrical.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein said diverter is pyramidal.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein said diverter comprises a disk suspended from a post.

6. The system of claim 3 wherein said diverter comprises a drum.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein said drum includes one or both of an open top end and an open top bottom.

8. The system of claim 2 wherein said diverter has a diameter substantially equal to or larger than a diameter of an exit from said wall.

9. The system of claim 2 further including a mechanism for raising and lowering said diverter.

10. The system of claim 2 further comprising a hood element disposed in an overlapping position with said well.

11. The system of claim 2 wherein said scrap submergence well defines a chamber housing a ramp and wherein said chamber has a first diameter adjacent to the ramp and a second greater diameter above the ramp.

12. The system of claim 2 wherein said diverter includes a densifying material cast therein.

13. The system of claim 2 further comprising at least one projection extending from said vortexing scrap submergence well and engaging said diverter to provide stability thereto.

14. A molten metal scrap submergence system comprising a furnace and a scrap submergence well, said system further comprising a hood element disposed in an overlapping position with regard to a top opening of said well and at least substantially sealing said top opening, said hood element including a scrap piece feed chute and a burner.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein said hood is a cylinder.

16. The system of claim 14 further comprising a thermocouple measuring a temperature within said hood element and automatically activating said burner when the temperature falls below about 1200°F.

17. A metal scrap submergence device comprising an open top chamber including side and base walls of a heat resistant material, an inlet in a side wall of the chamber for receiving molten metal, an outlet in the base of said chamber, and a ramp adjacent said side wall of the chamber, wherein internal side walls of the chamber

include a first diameter portion adjacent and above said ramp and a second, larger diameter portion above said first portion.

18. The device of claim 17 wherein said second diameter portion is at least about 20% larger in at least one plane than said first diameter portion.

19. The device of claim 17 wherein said first portion is at least substantially cylindrical and said second portion is at least substantially a truncated cone.

20. The device of claim 19 wherein said truncated cone includes walls angling outwardly at an angle of greater than about 15°.
