PATENT CLAIMS

A charge storage device (20) with a plurality of modules comprising horizontally displaced and electrically connected charge storage cells (11), the charge storage device comprising:

a. at least an upper module (10) and a lower module (10') that are vertically displaced;

b. a cooling fluid for cooling the charge storage cells (11);

c. a common cooling fluid circuit for circulating cooling fluid within the charge storage device (20), in particular through the upper and the lower module; characterized in that

d. the upper module comprises a liquid conduit (13) for guiding cooling liquid, in particular excess cooling liquid, to the lower module; and/or the upper module comprises at least one gas conduit (14) for guiding evaporated cooling fluid from the lower module to the upper module.

The device of claim 1, wherein a condenser, preferably a single condenser, is provided in the common cooling fluid circuit for condensing evaporated cooling fluid.

The device of any of claims 1 to 2, wherein the cells are in direct contact with the cooling fluid; in particular, wherein the cells are at least partially immersed in the cooling fluid.

The device of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein means for controlling a level of cooling liquid in at least some of the modules, in particular the upper module, are provided.

The device of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein a length of the liquid conduit in the upper module (10) determines or controls a level of cooling liquid in said upper module.

The device of the previous claim, wherein the length of the liquid conduit in the upper module (10) is chosen such that the cells are only partly immersed in cooling fluid.

The device of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein at least one module, preferably all modules, form a storage or vessel for the cooling fluid.

The device of any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the common cooling fluid circuit is configured to circulate cooling liquid through at least some, preferably all of the modules.

9. The device of any of claims lto 8, wherein each cell of a module has a first and second terminal and wherein the module has a first and second busbar respectively contacting the first and second terminals, characterized in that the first and second busbar and all first and second terminals are immersed in the cooling liquid.

10. The device of any of claims 1 to 9, characterized in that it comprises a reservoir (22) for storing cooling liquid and a heating (23) for heating the cooling liquid to a temperature above an ambient temperature and below a boiling temperature of the cooling fluid.

11. The device of any of claims 1 to 10, characterized in that the cooling circuit is devoid of a pump for circulating the cooling fluid.

12. A method of cooling a charge storage device (20) with an upper module (10) and a lower module (10'), each module comprising horizontally displaced and electrically connected cells (11) cooled by a cooling fluid of a two-phase cooling circuit, the method comprising

- providing cooling liquid to the upper module;

- guiding excess cooling liquid from the upper to the lower module;

- evaporating cooling liquid by means of heat from cells of the lower module being charged or discharged;

- guiding evaporated cooling fluid from the lower module to the upper module.

13. The method according to claim 12, further comprising condensing evaporated cooling fluid in a condenser, preferably a single condenser, provided in the two-phase cooling circuit.

14. The method according to claim 13, further comprising controlling a level of cooling liquid in at least some of the modules, in particular the upper module, in particular in such a way that the cells are only partly immersed in cooling fluid.
