A metal removal system and method are disclosed. An example method includes providing a sorptive media and providing a primary ligand having an affinity for the sorptive media, the primary ligand being an amphipathic, heterocyclic metal-coordinating compound. The method also includes providing a co-ligand having an affinity for the sorptive media. During a treatment process, a metal removal response is observed to be non-proportional between expected metal removal ability based on individual metal coordination abilities of the media alone and of all ligands, and actual net metal removal capacity resulting from a heterogeneous cooperation of the primary ligand and the sorptive media and activated by the co-ligand.

Cette invention concerne un système et un procédé d'élimination de métaux. Un procédé cité à titre d'exemple comprend les étapes consistant à utiliser un milieu sorbant et utiliser un ligand primaire présentant une affinité pour le milieu sorbant. Ledit ligand primaire est un composé amphiphatique, hétérocyclique, de coordination de métaux. Le procédé comprend en outre l'étape consistant à utiliser un co-ligand présentant une affinité pour le milieu sorbant. Au cours d'un procédé de traitement, il est observé qu'une réaction d'élimination de métaux est non proportionnelle entre l'aptitude prévue d'élimination de métaux fondée sur les aptitudes individuelles de coordination de métaux du milieu seul et de tous les ligands, et l'aptitude réelle nette d'élimination de métaux résultant d'une coopération hétérogène du ligand primaire et du milieu sorbant et activée par le co-ligand.
