The present invention provides novel kinocidin peptides comprising a C-terminal portion of a kinocidin, wherein the C-terminal portion encompasses an α-helical secondary structure and further displays antimicrobial activity. The kinocidin peptides of the invention are derived from and correspond to a C-terminal portion of a kinocidin that includes a &ggr;ϰo core and that can be a CXC, CC, or C class chemokine. Structural, physicochemical and functional properties of this novel class of antimicrobial peptides and amino acid sequences of particular kinocidin peptides are also disclosed. The invention also provides related antimicrobial methods.

La présente invention concerne des peptides de chémokine microbicide nouveaux comprenant une partie d'extrémité C d'une chémokine microbicide, la partie d'extrémité C comprenant une structure secondaire alpha-hélicoïdale et affichant en outre une activité antimicrobienne. Les peptides de chémokine microbicide de l'invention sont dérivés de et correspondent à une partie d'extrémité C d'une chémokine microbicide qui inclut un noyau &ggr;ϰo et qui peut être une chimiokine de classe C, CC, ou CXC. L'invention concerne également des propriétés fonctionnelles, physicochimiques et structurelles de cette nouvelle classe de peptides antimicrobiens et de séquences d'acides aminés de peptides de chémokine microbicide particuliers. L'invention concerne également des procédés antimicrobiens associés.
