WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. An orthopedic lαiee brace, comprising:
a medial hinge defining a medial pivot axis; and
a lateral hinge defining a lateral pivot axis;
wherein the medial and lateral pivot axes do not coincide with one another.
2. The orthopedic lαiee brace of Claim 1, wherein neither the medial pivot axis nor the lateral pivot axis coincides with a flexion-extension axis of the lαiee brace.
3. The orthopedic lαiee brace of Claim 2, wherein as the brace flexes the flexion-extension axis shifts posterior relative to the lateral pivot axis.
4. The orthopedic knee brace of Claim 2, wherein as the brace flexes the flexion-extension axis shifts anerior relative to the medial pivot axis.
5. An orthopedic knee brace, comprising:
a rigid thigh frame; and
a rigid calf frame;
wherein the thigh frame and calf frame are adapted to pivot relative to one another simultaneously about a substantially horizontal flexion-extension axis and a substantially vertical longitudinal rotation axis as the brace flexes and/or extends.
6. The orthopedic knee brace of Claim 5, further comprising a medial hinge.
7. The orthopedic knee brace of Claim 5, further comprising a lateral hinge.
8. An orthopedic lαiee brace, comprising:
a rigid frame including at least one of a rigid medial upright and a rigid lateral upright; and
a hinge, the hinge including a portion secured to an end of the at least one upright;
wherein the hinge portion is adapted to pivot relative to the frame about an axis that is substantially perpendicular to a flexion-extension axis of the brace.
9. The orthopedic knee brace of Claim 8, wherein the at least one upright includes a protrusion shaped as a faceted bar.
10. The orthopedic lαiee brace of Claim 9, wherein the hinge portion includes a recess that receives the faceted bar.

11. The orthopedic knee brace of Claim 10, wherein the hinge portion is freely pivotable relative to the protrusion about a longitudinal axis of the protrusion until surfaces of a sleeve of the hinge portion contact surfaces of the faceted bar.
12. A hinge adapted for use in an orthopedic knee brace, comprising:
a calf portion including a main plate portion and a sleeve portion, the sleeve portion receiving the main plate portion between first and second panels thereof.
13. The hinge of Claim 10, further comprising a thigh portion pivotably secured to the calf portion.
14. The hinge of Claim 13, wherein the thigh portion comprises first and second plates that receive the calf portion therebetween.
15. An orthopedic lαiee brace in combination with the hinge of Claim 10, comprising:
a rigid calf frame including at least one of a medial upright and a lateral upright;
wherein the calf portion is secured to a superior end of the at least one upright.

16. The combination of Claim 15, wherein the at least one upright includes a protrusion shaped as a faceted bar.
17. The combination of Claim 16, wherein the calf portion includes a recess that receives the faceted bar.
18. The combination of Claim 17, wherein the calf portion is pivotable with respect to the calf frame about an axis that is substantially perpendicular to a flexion-extension axis of the brace.
19. The combination of Claim 18, wherein the brace further comprises a rigid thigh frame pivotably secured to the rigid calf frame.
20. A method of supporting a knee in order to allow the lαiee to flex and extend in a natural manner, while restraining the lαiee against harmful motions, the method comprising the step of:
applying to the lαiee an orthopedic lαiee brace including a rigid thigh frame and a rigid calf frame;

wherein the thigh frame and calf frame are adapted to pivot relative to one another simultaneously about a substantially horizontal flexion-extension axis and a substantially vertical longitudinal rotation axis as the brace flexes and/or extends.
21. A method of supporting a lαiee in order to allow the lαiee to flex and extend in a natural manner, while restraining the knee against harmful motions, the method comprising the step of:
applying to the lαiee an orthopedic lαiee brace including a medial hinge defining a medial pivot axis, and a lateral hinge defining a lateral pivot axis;
wherein the medial and lateral pivot axes do not coincide with one another.
