THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

1. A bait container (1 ) comprising:
a housing (1a) having an opening thereto covered by a flap (5);
a bait section (7,9,11) inside the housing (1a); and
an inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) restricting access to the bait section (7,9,11),
characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait section (7,9,11) and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) therein, whereby, prior to immersion of the bait container (1 ) in water, the flap (5) is torn open to expose the opening and allow access to the inner, layer of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container (1), and following deployment of the bait container (1) by immersion in the water, the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) later degrades under the effect of the water to expose the bait section (7,9,11 ) to Crustacea or fish.

2. A bait container (1) comprising:
a housing (1a) having an opening thereto covered by a flap (5);
a bait section (7,9,11) inside the housing (1a) adapted to hold bait (13,15,17); and an inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) restricting access to the bait section (7,9,11),
characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait section (7,9,11) and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) therein, whereby, prior to immersion of the bait container (1) in water, the flap (5) is torn open to expose the opening and allow access to the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container (1), and following deployment of the bait container (1 ) by immersion in the water, the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) later degrades under the effect of the water to expose the bait section (7,9, 11 ) to Crustacea or fish.

3. A bait container (1) comprising: a housing (1a) having an opening thereto covered by a flap (5);
a first bait section (9) adapted to hold bait (15), the first bait section (9) having a first inner layer of biodegradable material (23) restricting access to the first bait section (9);
a second bait section (11 ) adapted to hold bait (17), the second bait section (11) having a second inner layer of biodegradable material (25) restricting access to the second bait section

(11); and
a partition (21) to separate the first bait section (9) and the second bait section (11), characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait sections (7,9,11) and the inner layers of biodegradable material therein (23,25), whereby, prior to immersion of the bait container (1 ) in water, the flap (5) is torn open to expose the opening and allow access to the inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container, and following deployment of the bait container (1 ) by immersion in the water, the inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) later degrade under the effect of the water to expose the bait sections (7,9,11 ) to Crustacea or fish.

4. The bait container (1) of any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that said flap (5) is provided on an exterior surface of the housing (1a).

5. The bait container (1) of any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that said flap (5) is torn downwardly along a substantial length of an outside surface of the housing (1a).

The bait container (1) of claim 5, characterized in that an outline of the flap (5) is formed through perforated portions (4) positioned on the outside surface of the bait container (1), whereby when the flap (5) is torn, the perforated portions (4) tear away so as to reveal access to ap interior of the container (1).

7. The bait container (1) of claim 6, characterized in that said flap (5) further comprises a tab portion (6) to permit a user to grasp and tear away the flap (5) from the bait container (1).

8. The bait container (1 ) of claim 1 , characterized in that said bait section (7,9, 11 ) contains bait (13,15,17).

9. A bait container (1 ) comprising:
a housing (1a) having an opening (2) thereto covered by an outer layer of biodegradable material (8);
a bait section (7,9,11 ) inside the housing (1a); and
an inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) restricting access to the bait section (7,9,11),
characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait section (7,9,11) and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) therein, whereby the outer layer of biodegradable material (8) slowly degrades following deployment of the bait container (1 ) by immersion in water to expose the opening (2) and allow access to the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container (1), and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) progressively degrades under the effect of the water to expose bait (13, 15, 17) in the bait section (7,9, 11 ) to Crustacea or fish.

10. A bait container (1 ) comprising:
a housing (1a) having an opening thereto (2) covered by an outer layer of biodegradable material (8);
a bait section (7,9, 11 ) inside the housing which is adapted to hold bait (13, 15, 17); and an inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) restricting access to the bait section (7,9,11 ),
characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait section (7,9,11) and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) therein, whereby the outer layer of biodegradable material (8) slowly degrades following deployment of the bait container (1 ) by immersion in water to expose the opening (2) and allow access to the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container (1), and the inner layer of biodegradable material (23,25) progressively degrades under the effect of the water to expose the bait (13,15,17) in the bait section (7,9,11) to Crustacea or fish.

The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 1 to 10, characterized in that said housing (1a) further comprises a second opening, through which access to an interior of the container (1 ) can be gained so as to allow for insertion of the biodegradable material (23,25) and the bait (13,15,17) through the second opening.

12. The bait container (1 ) of claim 11 , characterized in that said second opening is provided by a top portion (3) of the housing (1 a), the top portion (3) being removable from the housing (1 a).

13. The bait container (1 ) of claim 11 , characterized in that said second opening is provided by an openable top portion (3) surmounting the housing (1a).

14. The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 1 to 13, characterized in that a thickness, density or composition of the biodegradable material (8,23,25) can be varied.

15. The bait container (1) of claim 9, characterized in that said bait section (7,9,11 ) contains bait (13,15,17).

16. A bait container (1 ) comprising:
a housing (1 a) having an opening (2) thereto covered by an outer layer of biodegradable material (8);
a first bait section (9) adapted to hold bait (15), the first bait section (9) having a first inner layer of biodegradable material (23) restricting access to the first bait section (9);
a second bait section (11 ) adapted to hold bait (17), the second bait section (11 ) having a second inner layer of biodegradable material (25) restricting access to the second bait section (11); and a partition (21 ) to separate the first bait section (9) and the second bait section (11), characterized in that said housing (1a) houses the bait sections (7,9,11) and the inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) therein, whereby the outer layer of biodegradable material (8) slowly degrades following deployment of the bait container (1 ) by immersion in water to expose the opening (2) and allow access to the inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) in the bait container (1 ), and the inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) progressively degrade under the effect of the water to expose the bait (13,15,17) in the bait sections (7,9,11) to Crustacea or fish.

The bait container (1 ) of claim 16, characterized in that said housing (1a) further comprises a second opening, through which access to an interior of the container (1) can be gained so as to allow for insertion of the biodegradable material (23,25) and the bait (13,15,17) through the second opening.

18. The bait container (1 ) of claim 17, characterized in that said second opening of the housing

(1a) is provided by a top portion (3) of the housing (1a), the top portion (3) being removable from the housing (1a).

19. The bait container (1 ) of claim 17, characterized in that said second opening is provided by an openable top portion (3) surmounting the housing.

The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 16 to 19, characterized in that a thickness of the second inner layer of biodegradable material (25) is made thicker than a thickness of the first inner layer of biodegradable material (23), whereby the first and second inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) degrade at differing rates under the effect of the water, so as to expose the first and second bait sections (9,11 ) to Crustacea or fish at different times to one another.

21. The bait container (1 ) of claim any one of claims 16 to 19, characterized in that a density or composition of the first and second inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) can be varied , whereby the first and second inner layers of biodegradable material (23,25) degrade at differing rates under the effect of the water, so as to expose the first and second bait sections (9,11 ) to Crustacea or fish at different times to one another.

22. The bait container (1) of any one of claims 16 to 21 , characterized in that said first bait section (9) and said second bait section (11) are superposed on one another.

23. The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 16 to 22, characterized in that said partition (21 ) dividing the first and the second bait sections (9,11) is a cardboard divider.

24. The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 1 to 23, characterized in that said bait container (1) comprises a plurality of bait sections (7,9,11) inside the housing.

25. The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 1 to 24, characterized in that said bait container (1 ) is adapted for attachment to a fishing trap and lowered into the water with the trap.

26. The bait container (1) of claim 25, characterized in that said bait container (1) is secured to the fishing trap by twine or a hook.

27. The bait container (1 ) of any one of claims 1 to 26, characterized in that said biodegradable material (8,23,25) is comprised of a boiled mixture of marshmallow, molasses and corn syrup.
