Adaptive encoding of digital multimedia information may be performed by measuring link parameters, such as a received signal strength, a bit error rate, or a rate of received acknowledgement signals, in order to determine an available transmission rate. A maximum encoding rate may then be determined based on the available transmission rate by, for example, dividing the available transmission rate by an overhead factor. If the encoding rate of the digital multimedia information exceeds the calculated maximum encoding rate, adaptive encoding of the digital multimedia information may be performed in order to conform the encoding rate of the digital multimedia information to the calculated maximum encoding rate. This process may involve compressing selected frames within a frame sequence, deleting high frequency components within selected frames, deleting I-frame components within selected frames, or mapping values within selected frames to corresponding values having coarser quantization.

La présente invention a trait au codage adaptatif d'information multimédia digital pouvant être réalisé par la mesure de paramètres de liaison, tels que l'intensité d'un signal reçu, un taux d'erreur binaire, ou un taux de signaux reçus de confirmation de réception, en vue de la détermination d'un débit de transmission disponible. Un taux maximal de codage peut ensuite être déterminé en fonction du débit de transmission disponible, par exemple, par la division du débit de transmission disponible par un facteur de surdébit. Si le taux de codage maximal de l'information multimédia numérique dépasse le taux de codage maximal calculé, le codage adaptatif de l'information multimédia numérique peut être effectué afin de faire concorder le taux de codage d'information multimédia numérique avec le taux de codage maximal calculé. Ce procédé peut comporter la compression de trames sélectionnées au sein d'une séquence de trames, la délétion de composantes de trames I au sein des trames sélectionnées, ou le mappage de valeurs au sein des trames sélectionnées aux valeurs correspondantes présentant une quantification moins affinée.
