An access node that is deployable at a distance from a cable company headend or a telephone company central office serves residential and business subscribers within a small geographical area. The access node provides interoperability between and across communications links and protocols, thereby providing a modular, configurable access point for both business and residential users that enables the service provider to tailor its services for each user in a cost-effective manner. The access node includes modular interfaces to multiple communications links and protocols on its network side and modular interfaces to multiple communications links and protocols on its user or access side. A switch/router connects the outputs of the two interfaces together and aggregates traffic to the network while simultaneously partitioning traffic to the users to the appropriate connections.

Un noeud d'accès pouvant être déployé à distance d'une tête de câble d'une entreprise de câblodistribution ou d'un central téléphonique dessert les abonnés résidentiels et commerciaux d'une petite zone géographique. Ledit noeud d'accès est exploitable entre des liaisons de communications et des protocoles ou sur ceux-ci, fournissant ainsi un point d'accès modulaire et configurable à la fois pour les utilisateurs résidentiels et commerciaux, ce qui permet au fournisseur de services de personnaliser ses services pour chaque utilisateur de manière peu coûteuse. Ce noeud d'accès comprend des interfaces modulaires pour de multiples liaisons de communications et protocoles du côté réseau et des interfaces modulaires pour de multiples liaisons de communications et protocoles du côté utilisateur ou accès. Un commutateur/routeur connecte les sorties des deux interfaces et regroupe le trafic vers le réseau tout en répartissant simultanément ledit trafic entre les utilisateurs vers les connexions appropriées.
