CLAIMS
1. A cross connection element (20) which comprises at least one input (31), outputs (32, 33, 37) and branching means (38 to 40) for forwarding through predetermined outputs (32, 33, 37) at least some signal components of a first serial data signal (S1) received through the input, characterized in that
the branching means comprise means (38, 39) for forwarding single signal components of the serial data signal (S1), received through said input

(31), transparently as serial data signals (S2, S3) via an output (32, 33) indi-cated by routing data stored in memory means (40) of the cross connection element (20), and
the cross connection element (1) comprises at least one output (37) for forwarding transparently a single signal component of the first serial data signal (S1) indicated by the routing data stored in the memory means (40).
2. A cross connection element as claimed in claim 1, characterized by comprising
demultiplexing means (34) for separating from one another the signal components of the serial data signal (S1) received through said input (31) , switching means (38), responsive to the memory means (40), for supplying the signal components received from the outputs of the demultiplexing means (34) to the outputs (32, 33, 37) indicated by the routing data stored in the memory means (40), and
multiplexing means (35, 36), arranged in connection with at least two outputs (32, 33), for producing a serial data signal (S2, S3) of the signal components received from the switching means (38) and for forwarding said serial data signals (S2, S3) through said at least two outputs (32, 33).
3. A cross connection element as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the cross connection element (20) comprises
means (34) for separating a predetermined control signal (CNT) from the serial data signal (S1) received through said input (31), and
means (39) for storing routing data included in said control signal (CNT) in the memory means (40) to replace the previous routing data.
4. A cross connection element as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said at least one output (37) for forwarding the single com-ponent of the received serial data signal (S1) is a 2 Mbit/s output in accordance with the CCITT recommendations G.703.

5. A cross connection element as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the cross connection element (20) consists of one single circuit.
6. A data transmission network of a telecommunication system, which network comprises network elements (MSC, BSC, BTS1 to BTS3) that communicate with one another with serial data transmission connections, the network elements comprising at least one input, branching means and outputs for forwarding to other network elements (MSC, BSC, BTS1 to BTS3) at least some signal components of the serial data signals, received through the input of the network elements, characterized by comprising at least one network element (BTS1) whose branching means include a cross connection element (20) comprising
means (31) for transparently forwarding single signal components of a serial data signal (S1), received through an input (31), as serial data signals (S2, S3) via outputs (32, 33) indicated by routing data stored in memory means (40) of the cross connection element (20), to other network elements (BSC, BTS2 to BTS3), and
at least one output (21, 37) for forwarding a single signal component of the data signal (S1) received through said input (31) transparently to the network element's (BTS1) own devices (TRX1 to 12).
7. A data transmission network as claimed in claim 6, characterized in
that the data transmission network comprises means for transmitting a control signal (CNT) containing new routing data, from a network man-agement centre (O&M) to the cross connection elements (20) of the network elements, by means of said serial data transmission connections, and
that the cross connection element (20) of said at least one network element (BTS1) comprises means (34, 39) for separating the control signal

(CNT) from the received serial data signal (S1) and for storing the new routing data contained in the control signal in the memory means (40) of the cross connection element (20) to replace the previous routing data.
8. A data transmission network as claimed in claim 6or7, characterized in that said data transmission network is the data transmission network of a cellular radio system, and that said network elements consist of network elements, such as mobile services switching centres (MSC), base station controllers (BSC) and base stations (BTS1 to BTS3), of the cellular radio system.
9. A data transmission network as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8, characterized in that the cross connection element (20) of said at least one network element (BTS1) comprises means (39) for transmitting the control signal indicating the routing data stored in the memory means (40) of the cross connection element, by means of said serial data transmission connections, to the network management centre (O&M) of the data transmission network.
