What is Claimed is;

In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, the apparatus having a trigger mounted for pivoting movement relative thereto, a pump chamber and a pump piston connected with the trigger and received in the pump chamber for reciprocating movement therein in response to pivoting movement of the trigger, and a vent chamber and a vent piston connected with the trigger and received in the vent chamber for reciprocating movement therein in response to pivoting movement of the trigger, an improvement comprising:
at least one sidewall surrounding an axial length of the vent chamber, the sidewall separating an interior volume of the vent chamber from an interior volume of the container, and a slot extending through the sidewall and communicating the vent chamber interior with the container interior, the slot having a width dimension and a length dimension, the length dimension being larger than the width dimension.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 1, further comprising:
the length of the slot extending axially along the sidewall parallel with the axis of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 1, wherein:
the vent chamber is a cylindrical chamber with an opening at one end of its axial length and an end wall at an opposite end of its axial length, and the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the slot and the end wall, and the vent piston prevents communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the slot and the open end of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 1, wherein:
the vent chamber is a cylindrical chamber with an opening at one end of its axial length and an end wall at an opposite end of its axial length;
the slot has a forward edge and a rearward edge at opposite ends of its length, the forward edge is positioned toward the open end of the vent chamber and the rearward edge is positioned toward the end wall of the vent chamber;
and the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the forward end of the slot and the end wall of the vent chamber, and the vent piston prevents communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the forward edge of the slot and the open end of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 1, wherein:
the vent chamber is a cylindrical chamber with an opening at one end of its axial length and an end wall at an opposite end of its axial length and having a circular cross section with an internal diameter that is constant along the path of reciprocation of the vent piston through the vent chamber; and,
the vent piston has a general cylindrical configuration with opposite forward and rearward end surfaces, the forward end surface facing the open end of the vent chamber and the rearward end surface facing the end wall of the vent chamber, and the cylindrical configuration of the vent piston tapers between the rearward and forward end surfaces with the vent piston having a cross sectional diameter at the rearward end surface that is larger than the cross sectional diameter of the vent piston at the forward end surface, the periphery of the vent piston at the rearward end surface engages in sealing engagement with the vent chamber as the vent piston reciprocates through the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 5, wherein:
the slot has a forward edge and a rearward edge at opposite ends of its length, the forward edge being positioned toward the open end of the vent chamber and the rearward edge being positioned toward the end wall of the vent chamber; and,
the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the rearward end surface of the vent piston is positioned between the forward edge and the rearward edge of the slot.

In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, the apparatus having a sprayer housing and a nozzle for dispensing fluid, a trigger mounted for pivoting movement relative thereto, a pump chamber formed in the sprayer housing and a pump piston connected with the trigger and received in the pump chamber for reciprocating movement therein in response to pivoting movement of the trigger, the reciprocating movement of the pump piston alternately drawing fluid from the container into the pump chamber and forcing fluid out of the pump chamber and through the nozzle, an improvement comprising:
a vent housing discrete from the sprayer housing, the vent housing having a vent opening therein; and, means response to pivoting movement of the trigger for alternately enabling communication and preventing communication of the interior volume of the container with an exterior environment of the container through the vent opening.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 7, wherein:
a vent chamber is formed in the vent housing, the vent chamber has at least one sidewall separating the vent chamber from the interior volume of the container, and the vent opening extends through the sidewall and communicates the interior volume of the container with an interior volume of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 8, wherein:
the vent chamber is a cylindrical chamber having an axial length surrounded by the sidewall with one end of the chamber closed and an opposite end of the chamber open, and the vent opening is a narrow slot through the sidewall.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 9, wherein:
the slot has a length that extends along the sidewall parallel to the axis of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 9, wherein:
the means for alternately enabling communication and preventing communication with the interior volume of the container includes a vent piston connected to the pump piston, and the vent piston is received in the vent chamber for reciprocating movement within the vent chamber in response to operation of the trigger.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 11, wherein:
the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the slot and the closed end of the vent chamber, and wherein the vent piston prevents communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the slot and the open end of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 11, wherein:
the slot has a forward edge and a rearward edge at opposite ends of its length, the forward edge is positioned toward the open end of the vent chamber and the rearward edge is positioned toward the closed end of the vent chamber, and the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the forward end of the slot and the closed end of the vent chamber, and the vent piston prevents communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the vent piston is positioned in the vent chamber between the forward edge of the slot and the open end of the vent chamber.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 11, wherein:
the vent chamber has a circular cross section and an internal diameter that is constant along the length of travel of the vent piston, and the vent piston has a general cylindrical configuration with opposite rearward and forward end surfaces, the rearward end surface facing the closed end of the vent chamber and the forward end surface facing the open end of the vent chamber, and the cylindrical configuration of the vent piston tapers between the rearward and forward end surfaces with the vent piston having a cross sectional diameter at the rearward end surface that is larger than a cross sectional diameter of the vent piston at the forward end surface, the rearward end surface being in sealing engagement with the vent chamber as the piston reciprocates.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 14, wherein:
the slot has a forward edge and a rearward edge at opposite ends of its length, the forward edge is positioned toward the open end of the vent chamber and the rearward edge is positioned toward the closed end of the vent chamber, and the vent piston enables communication of the container interior volume with the exterior environment of the container through the slot when the rearward end surface of the vent piston is positioned between the forward edge and the rearward edge of the slot.
16.
In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, an improvement comprising:
a trigger member pivotally connected to and suspended beneath an underside of the sprayer apparatus; the trigger member having opposite first and second ends; the first end having a handle surface formed thereon; the second end having a pair of laterally spaced, upwardly projecting flanges formed thereon, the flanges extending over opposite lateral sides of the sprayer apparatus, and a bar connected to and extending laterally between the pair of flanges, the bar spanning over a top surface of the sprayer apparatus.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 16, wherein:
the pair of flanges have mutually opposed, laterally spaced interior surfaces and the bar is connected to and extends between the interior surfaces .

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 16, wherein:
the pair of laterally spaced flanges are re-siliently deformable and the bar extending between the pair of flanges resists deformation of the flanges toward each other.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 17, wherein:
a pivot post is formed on an exterior surface of each flange opposite the interior surface of the flange, the posts are coaxial and the bar is positioned between the posts.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 19, wherein:
the apparatus has sockets receiving the pivot posts for pivotally mounting the trigger member to the apparatus, the bar maintaining the lateral spacing between the interior surfaces of the flanges thereby preventing dislodging of the pivot posts from the sockets during operation of the trigger sprayer apparatus.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 17, wherein:
the lateral spacing between the interior surfaces of the flanges spaces the interior surfaces from the lateral sides of the sprayer apparatus positioned between the interior surfaces, and the bar maintains the lateral spacing between the interior surfaces and prevents the interior surfaces from contacting the sprayer apparatus .

In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, the apparatus having a fluid conducting channel extending therethrough, the channel having opposite first and second ends with a valve seat at the first end of the channel and a nozzle orifice at the second end of the channel, and a spinner assembly in the channel, the spin- ner assembly having a valve plug positioned adjacent the valve seat and a spinner positioned adjacent the nozzle orifice with a biasing means connected between the valve plug and the spinner urging the valve plug against the valve seat; an improvement comprising:
the fluid channel and the spinner having surfaces which engage each other with the spinner assembly assembled within the fluid conducting channel to align the spinner and orifice.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 22, wherein:
at least a surface portion of the fluid channel adjacent the nozzle orifice has a tapered cross section.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 22, wherein:
the tapering portion of the fluid channel engages with and centers the spinner relative to the nozzle orifice.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 24, wherein:
the spinner has a center axis that is positioned coaxially with a center axis of the nozzle orifice by the tapered surface portion of the fluid channel.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 22, wherein:
the tapered portion of the fluid channel has a circular cross section with a diameter that decreases toward the nozzle orifice.
27.
In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, an improvement comprising:
a gasket secured between the sprayer apparatus and the container providing a fluid tight connection between the sprayer apparatus and the container, the gasket having at least one hole therethrough, and means provided on the sprayer apparatus and extending into the gasket hole for securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 27, wherein:
a tube extends between the sprayer apparatus and the container and a second hole is provided through the gasket, the tube extending through the second hole.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 28, wherein:
the means securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus includes a post secured to the sprayer apparatus, the post being inserted into the gasket hole to secure the gasket to the sprayer apparatus.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 29, wherein:
the sprayer apparatus has an annular rim that engages the gasket, at least one rib is formed on the sprayer apparatus extending radially inwardly from the annular rim, and the post is formed on the rib with the rib spacing the post radially inwardly of the annular rim.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 30, wherein:
a peripheral portion of the gasket engages in a sealing engagement with the annular rim, and the rib spaces the post radially inwardly of the peripheral portion of the gasket.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 28, wherein:
the gasket has a plurality of holes therethrough and the means securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus includes a plurality of posts secured to the sprayer apparatus, and each post is inserted into a hole to secure the gasket to the sprayer apparatus.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 32, wherein: the sprayer apparatus has an annular rim engaging in sealing engagement with a peripheral portion of the gasket, a plurality of ribs are formed on the sprayer apparatus extending radially inwardly of the annular rim, each rib has one of the posts formed thereon with the rib spacing the post radially inwardly of the annular rim and the peripheral portion of the gasket.

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 28, wherein:
the means securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus includes a post secured to the sprayer apparatus, the post having a distal end that is inserted through the gasket hole to an opposite side of the gasket from the sprayer apparatus, the post having a head formed on the distal end preventing the gasket from withdrawing from the post to thereby secure the gasket to the sprayer apparatus .

The sprayer apparatus of Claim 27, wherein:
a tube extends between the sprayer apparatus and the container;
the gasket is provided with a plurality of holes therethrough, the tube extending through one of the plurality of holes; and,
the means securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus includes a plurality of posts secured to the sprayer apparatus, each post of the plurality having a distal end that is inserted through a hole of the plurality of holes in the gasket to an opposite side of the gasket from the sprayer apparatus, each post having a head formed on its distal end preventing the gasket from withdrawing from the post to thereby secures the gasket to the sprayer apparatus .

In a trigger sprayer apparatus for dispensing liquid from a container connected to the apparatus, where a gasket is positioned between the apparatus and the container and provides a fluid tight connection between the apparatus and container, a method of securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus, the method comprising:
providing at least one hole in the gasket;
providing at least one post secured to the sprayer apparatus, the post having a distal end;
inserting the distal end of the post through the hole in the gasket; and
deforming the post to prevent the gasket from withdrawing from the post, thereby securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus.

The method of Claim 36, further comprising:
deforming the post by heating the post distal end and then shaping the heated end into a head, with the head having a cross section dimension larger than a cross section dimension of the gasket hole.

The method of Claim 36, further comprising:
providing a plurality of holes through the gasket; providing a plurality of posts secured to the sprayer apparatus, each post of the plurality, having a distal end;
inserting the distal end of each post of the plurality of posts into one hole of the plurality of gasket holes; and
deforming each post to prevent the gasket from withdrawing from the posts, thereby securing the gasket to the sprayer apparatus.

The method of Claim 38, further comprising:
deforming each of the plurality of posts by heating the distal ends and then shaping the heated ends into heads, with the heads each having a cross section dimen- sion larger than a cross section dimension of the gasket hole.
